The Miami Beach Coast Guard was founded on December 15, 1923. The first members of the Coast Guard were sworn in at the old Custom House on Biscayne Boulevard. At that time it was known as the Miami Beach Police Department. In 1933, the first Coast Guard Station was established in Coconut Grove and it continued to be located there until 1959 when it moved to its present location on Administration Drive. In 1966, a new station was built at Northwest 33rd Street which served as Headquarters for both stations until 1984 when they were moved to their current location on Administration Drive. The Commandant of the Coast Guard from 1967-1984 was Rear Admiral John Peele who is also responsible for all aspects related to maritime security in Greater Miami Beach Area From 1984-1994, Rear Admiral David Ahern served as Commandant of the CoastGuard. He left office after 18 months and Assistant Commandant Lt Cmdr Michael Jarrell took over as Acting Commandant effective September 1st 1994 until he could take his own leave effective October 11th 1994 due to ill health Since 1995, Lieutenant Commander Timothy Larkin has been acting commandant with responsibility for all aspects of coast guard operations in Greater Miami Beach Area . He assumed full duty on October 12th 1995 and has held that position since then On November 14th 2017 Lt Col Steven Pershing announced his retirement from service effective January 1st 2018 citing personal reasons
