The Miami Beach National Guard was established in 1951. The unit has been involved in many different aspects of the city since its inception, including providing security and protection for public figures, conducting law enforcement duties, and providing disaster relief. In 1987, the Guard was renamed the Miami Beach Police Department. In 2000, the National Guard detachment in Miami Beach was disbanded and its assets were turned over to the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office. The Miami Beach area has a lengthy history of being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. The city was founded on December 5, 1795 by Spanish settlers, who named it Santo Domingo de la Vega after the Dominican Republic. The area now known as Miami Beach was first settled by Palm Islanders and Indian traders in the early 1800s. In 1837, Florida became a U.S. territory and Miami Beach became part of the newly created county ofMiami-Dade. In 1903, ownership of Miami Beach passed from Miami-Dade to Henry Flagler, who turned it into one of his many properties that he developed throughout South Florida. Flagler served as mayor of Miami from 1907 to 1912 and then as governor from 1913 to 1917. He also donated land for what is now American Airlines Flight 1 (later renamed US Airways Flight 3) at downtown MIA Airport in 1923 and built a hotel on this land called "Flagler's Tower". In 1927, he donated additional parcels for use as an airport—this included land along Biscayne Boulevard north of where today's T-Mobile Park stands—and named it "Flagler International Airport". During World War II, the airport played an important role in the war effort because it allowed Allied bombers to bomb German targets without risking friendly fire. After the war ended, flaglers continued to donate property and funds to help improve RAFB until his death in 1958. In 1972–1973, Flagler's family staged a world famous exhibition at their beachfront estate called "A Century Of Art At Flagler". This exhibit showcased works by many notable architects including Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen among others In 1977–1978, with plans under way for another major expansion project at RAFB which would have involved adding more gates and runway space as well as new buildings adjacent to Terminal 2 (now Concourse A), Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Expo '77 within weeks of landfalling on South Florida; all but two structures onsite were destroyed or heavily damaged beyond recovery This devastating event effectively closed down both airports for months while reconstruction began which eventually included rebuilding both terminals using modern technology Both airports reopened fully in late 1978 following some significant investment by local businesses led by Hotelier DonatellO Portella alongside FAA approval
