Naval ships were a mainstay of the Miami Beach community during the early 20th century. The first naval ship to dock in Miami Beach was the USS Constitution in 1853. From that point on, Miami Beach enjoyed an uninterrupted presence of warships from both the United States Naval fleet and foreign fleets. Some of the most famous naval vessels that served in Miami Beach include USS Constitution (1853-1865), USS Perry (1906-1969), HMS Repulse (1940-1945), and HMAS Sydney (1942-1945). In 1964, when America's only nuclear powered warship was decommissioned, Miami Beach became home to its last navy ship, USS Enterprise. The era of naval ships inMiamiBeach ended with America's entry into World War II. After America's defeat at Pearl Harbor, there was a cessation of all U.S.-led maritime activity in South Florida. The Miami Beach Naval Shipyard is a naval shipyard located in Miami Beach, Florida. It was established on December 16, 1942 as the Miami Beach Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company by the United States Navy. The company was merged into the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in 1970. In 1984, General Dynamics relinquished its ownership of the company to Bethlehem Steel Corporation, which in turn sold it to Navistar Inc. on October 1, 1990. On November 12, 2000, Navistar announced that it would close the plant after thirteen years of operation due to low profits and competition from other submarine manufacturers. The plant closed on December 15th 2000.

Miami Beach, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population of the city was over 66,000 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded on May 15, 1925 by Major John Fenton and Mrs. Anna M. Fleming as part of the Miami Beach Naval Air Station expansion project. On December 1, 1926 Major Fenton donated 5 acres (2 ha) of land at 7451 Collins Avenue to the City for $1 per acre ($/ha). The first dam was built on this site in 1931 and became known as "Fenton Dam". The name "Miami Beach" originated from Spanish meaning "Island of the Dolphins" or "Island of Beauty". The area now called Miami Beach was originally inhabited by Indians: Achechiutl people bordered it on three sides and there were also Seminole people living near present-day Pier Biltmore Boulevard and Collins Avenue. In 1795 Captain James Cook discovered what is now Miami Beach when he sailed along its coast searching for a new route to Asia through South America; his map does not include what is now Flagler Island. Captain Cook named it Isla de la Cruz after one of his ships La Cruz which had been lost at sea during his voyage. Spanish explorer Juana Fernández de Oviedo explored the region in 1513–1514 while trying to find a way to reach India from Cuba; she sighted an island that she thought may be Havana but never landed there because her ship ran into shoals while rounding it corner near present day Key Biscayne Boulevard and North Andrews Drive. She named this island San Juan de la cruz (St John's Cross) after her ship's captain who died during their trip ashore; however, Spain only granted Castro access to San Juan in 1699 because Japan had claimed Cuba previously. Englishman John Hawkins discovered Key West on July 8th, 1710 while sailing under Captains James Cook and Edward Vernon with HMS Discovery; he named it Hawkins Cay after him but Spain soon claimed all key areas including Key West so Hawkins rename himself governor general of Pensacola (Gouverneur General del Puerto de Pensacola). After Spain ceded control over Cuba to Great Britain in 1898 she renamed Key West back to Havana – making it still unofficially an American colony though most Americans regarded Cuban sovereignty over that territory as illegitimate at best After World War II many students returned home following service in military or allied countries including some who chose not to return once they realized how quickly postwar society unfolded compared with their memories or expectations back home In 1946 Mayor Manuel López increased funding for beach operations which included dredging out channels between mainland beaches and neighboring Biscayne Bay resulting in more visitors arriving each day Meanwhile construction began on two bridges across Everglades River: one connecting downtown Miami with I-95 northbound interchange east of US 27 & Utopia Parkway southbound exit west of NW First Street just past mile marker 152 then completed toll road bridge crossing over river into State Road 44 running concurrently southbound US 27 exit & west side I-595 exit onto SR 44 becoming Lincoln Rd thence St Augustine Dr., Intersection with SR 45 about 1 mi ESE reopening destroyed due within few months prior being first closed Nov.–Dec 1945 due lack cf funds needed for repair& replacement aftermath Hurricane Flora Aug.–Sept 1950 docked off shore caused extensive flooding affecting nearly entire city Marina did not reopen until Sept 1954
The history of Miami Beach begins with the arrival of Spanish settlers in the early 18th century. The area that is now Miami Beach was part of Spanish Florida, which was established in 1795. In 1835, after American independence was achieved, the United States acquired Florida from Spain. The first white people to live in what is now Miami Beach were Italian immigrants who arrived in the 1880s. They built a small community on Boynton Boulevard near Biscayne Bay and named it Villa Park. By 1910, however, most Italians had left for other parts of America and Villa Park became known as Little Italy. In 1925, two brothers named Eddy and Marvin Karp founded Karp Brothers Inc., a frozen food company that would later become one of South Florida's largest employers. Karp Brothers soon became an important player in local politics and enjoyed a long relationship with Mayor Manuel Largo Jr.. In 1977, they donated land to create what is now Marlins Park. The park's construction began just weeks after Largo's death and came to fruition thanks to financial help from their friend Eddie DeBartolo Jr..
