Miami Beach is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 66,724 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Miami-Dade County and the second most populous city in Florida after Tampa. The history of Miami Beach goes back to 1894 when Henry Flagler built his first hotel on Biscayne Bay. In 1928, two brothers, Harry and Maurice Sheehan bought land on North Key West Boulevard and began developing it into what is now known as Miami Beach. The Sheehan brothers were also developers in Coral Gables and other nearby cities before they opened up Miami Beach proper to tourists in 1928. In 1933, Buddy Adelman became president of American Airlines and ordered that all airline terminals be turned into hotels so that passengers could disembark and visit their planes without having to go through security checkpoints. In 1926, the Miami Beach Board of Health bought 8 acres in what is now downtown Miami Beach for $1,000. The first building was a 10-room wooden asylum which served as home to mental patients until 1929. In 1936, the board also purchased land on Biscayne Boulevard and built a new asylum, which became known as the Miami General Hospital. The hospital had an emergency room and a wing for mental patients with special needs. It also housed a bakery, grocery store, and other businesses. In 1941, the hospital was renamed the Stonington Clinic after Dr. Alfred Swayne who chaired the board at that time. The clinic closed in 1977 due to budget cuts but reopened in 1984 as part of University of South Florida’s medical school campus. It continued to serve as a psychiatric facility until it closed again in 2001 when it merged into UMIST’s School of Medicine and Dentistry.
