The Miami Gardens Air Force Base is home to the Third Wing of the Florida Air National Guard, which contains two squadrons of F-16 Fighting Falcons. The Miami Gardens unit was formed on July 14th, 1951 as the 453rd Fighter Squadron and served in Tactical Air Command during the Korean War. They were then re-designated as the 7th Fighter Squadron in 1957 and served as a fighter bomber wing until their current role as a ground forces air defense squadron. The 1st Bombardment Wing also stationed at MGAB from 1949 until it moved to Keesler AFB in Mississippi in 1951.
The first jet aircraft to be stationed at MIAFB were Republic F-84G Thunderjets. These planes arrived on October 20th, 1948 and flew their first mission on November 3rd. On December 5th, 1948, General James Doolittle led his Far East flight and brought back evidence of development of jet aviation to US servicemen living in Korea. This event is considered by many to be the beginning of jet aviation in South Asia.
In 1952, an agreement was made between MIAFB and Dow Chemical Company for production of rockets and missiles from processed plant equipment located at MIAFB. This project became known as Project Overdrive and produced over 1,100 items such as long range bombers, missiles, launch platforms and warheads for USAF jets flown into combat over Southeast Asia during both World Wars II and Viet Nam – making MIAFB one of America’s most prodigious missile production plants during that time period. In 1957 they began producing turboprop airplanes under contract with Boeing Aircraft Company – these planes are still used today by American Airlines across all types of airspace!
On July 14th 1951 Colonel John J Vaught assumed commandof 453rd FS & Detachment C (Missile Development) activated at MIAFB becoming responsible foruds test program/development / operations with directives from HQ USAF especially drving QF-4C Phantom nose cone modification specifically for use at MIAFB/Keesler AFB Missile Range #1 following Marshall's guidance accomplished thru performance tests last year; later renamed 7FS(AG)-7 flying units equipped only EB-17B Flying Daggers originally RB-27RB freighter converted/modified Dec '51 (YAKO). Withdrawn from active duty Jan'53 due to budget constraints; reassigned Aug '54 ATC detachment hereuntil activation Jul '55 flying EBTs assigned Nov 1955 when Headquarters moved herefrom Jackson Army Airfield

Miami Gardens was founded in 1886 by General John J. Pershing as a military post on the banks of the Miami River. The post was named after General James K. Polk, who was then the U.S. ambassador to Spain and had sailed up the river with Commodore Perry in 1805, which led to the Spanish-American War. After being captured by Spanish forces, Miami Garden served as an American prison for a year before becoming a free port for American ships during Reconstruction. In 1928, Miami Gardens became part of Miami Beach and since then has undergone many changes both inside and outside of its walls. In 1984, it became a city and is now one of South Florida’s most populous neighborhoods with over 100,000 residents living within its borders. The history of Miami Gardens can be traced back to 1881 when General John J Pershing decided to establish a military post on the banks of the Miami River at what is today known as “Miami Gardens” after he helped lead America into war against Spain in 1805. The post was named after James K Polk who had been ambassador to Spain at that time and also participated in Commodore Perry's famous visit downriver two years earlier which led to the Spanish-American War (1804-1808). When captured by Spanish forces in Havana during that conflict, Captain William Moseley set himself free and took his shipmates ashore at this strategic location where they established their own commando force called "TheMiami Rangers". The first permanent settlers arrived here in 1886 under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Chapman from New York City after landing on Cuban shores aboard USS Constitution (CVA-2) from Key West following an unsuccessful mission undertaken by Commodore Edward Kingdon Morris USN via sailingboat concept known as "Utopia Planitia" [1]. As sugarcane production increased along with travel between Cuba and southern Florida via steamboats starting in earnest around 1885 it became necessary for American soldiers garrisoned along Samaná Peninsula - including barracks/forts called Fort Myers - to purchase supplies stores boatloads at San Juan Bautista de la Bahia[2] leading directly into key market areas such as Santiago de Cuba & Guantánamo Bay while officers enjoyed access ashore enjoying wine tastings etcetera thus provoking early morning raids by local guerrillas resulting largely in few casualties but significant plunder especially involving firearms stored Alongside ammunition magazines powder magazines cannons horses saddles shoes bedding umbrellas clothing kitchenware including piesCandied citrus fruit Leaded gasoline lamps kerosene lamps candles pottery lamps Beers still available through several white men running small grocery stores authorized only for GIs stationed there smokestacks still visible from various parts of townFormerly downtown area now residential areas near busy streets
Miami Gardens was founded in 1912 by Henry B. Hahn as a small, unincorporated community near the present-day city of Miami. The area that is now Miami Gardens was part of Dade County and it was not until 1915 when the municipality was created by splitting off Government Road from Indian Creek Road. In 1932, Miami Gardens became an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. In 1951, Miami Gardens annexed neighboring Cutler Heights and in 1964, merged with Dade City to form the current city of Miami.
