The Miami Gardens Army Post Office has been serving the community in Miami Gardens, Florida since 1917. The post office is located at 305 W. Washington Ave., and is open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.–noon Saturday. The Miami Gardens Army Post Office provides mail to military personnel stationed in Fort Myers and downtown Tampa, FL as well as to soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the Miami Gardens Army Post Office serves as an important part of the military community in Miami Gardens by providing access to mail for service members stationed here as well as for those who are deployed overseas. In addition, the post office provides an important fact-finding capability for soldiers who may be visiting our area during their stay with the military or during their deployment on some other mission abroad. This visit can provide valuable insights into life inside or outside of the military bubble! The history of the Miami Gardens Army Post Office begins with World War I when it was established at 2226 NW 95th St., just east of Wade Avenue in what is now Overtown Heights neighborhood of SouthMiami Beach). At that time, it was one of only a handful of army posts operated by the Department of War within Broward County (then part of Florida). From 1917 until 1945, all army posts were located within Broward County; however, from 1945 until 1993 they were distributed among various county jurisdictions (including Palm Beach County). In 1993, all army posts were returned to Broward County under then-Govt Policy Number 04-1427 which placed responsibility forposting them within each county government unit according to its population size rather than within individual departments/agencies within state government units (as had been done previously). One indication that postal service was essential to soldier morale during World War I was that there was no “frequent flyer” program available back then! Letters delivered by air often arrived after long delays due to weather conditions over Europe or Japan; this made regular use of couriers necessary not only for letters but also parcels weighing more than 12 ounces (40 grams), which required special handling instructions on delivery forms! Even today many servicemen send small parcels via air cargo instead of mailing them off directly! Postal service also played an important role in supplying food rations shipped out daily by railcarloads across both WWI theaters along with medical supplies needed for troops operating beyond US soil; both food items such as bread and butter and medications like morphine became available almost immediately following Armistice Day 1918!! On November 11th 1921 local police responded after a groupof teenage girls walking near Ft Myers AAF discovered large cacheof cigarettes hidden undergrowth near runway end -–containing over 1200 lbs (500 kg) worth OF tobacco!!! After investigating they learned that items found therein included rifles & artillery pieces wanted by US government forces earmarked for use against Spanish spies!! After making numerous arrests including age 13 girl who confessed she had helped unload munitions onto train bound for Spain!, case went before juvenile court judge Karl Friedrich Kapp where he sentenced her parents jointlyto 5 years hard labor plus $100 fine!!!! NOTE: Incident occurred prior TO establishment OF MIA GARDENS ARMY POST OFFICE!!!!! In 1944 local officials decided that Fort Myers AAF should become home permanent DOD detachment #1 so new HQ moved from Ft Myers branch office building at 2100 NW 107th St.#1 remained active thru 1966 when base closed & detachment disbanded effective Jan 1st 1967… Headquarters moved again Dec 10 1985 – current location….. 305 W Washington Ave….MIA GARDENS ARMY POST OFFICE

Miami Gardens is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The city is located on the southern tip of Biscayne Bay and its name comes from two small streams that run through it - "Miamis" and "Garland". The first recorded settlement in what is now Miami Gardens was made by Indians in 1795. By 1825, the area had grown to include present-day South Dixie Highway (SR 7) and Northwest Eighth Street. In 1894, Miami Park became a consolidated town with portions of Dixie Heights to the south and east. On December 6 of that year, annexation by Miami completed annexation of all but two precincts within present-day Everglades City which were then unincorporated areas including parts of today's MIA neighborhood as well as most of Today's Kendallville adjacent to Miamis Creek/Garland Stream Road/Washington Boulevard). In 1888, Elisha Gray started an elevator company in what is now downtown Miami Gardens with his brother Solomon Gray. They built many early buildings including Kress & Griggs Elevator Company Building on Northwest Eighth Street between Washington Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard – still standing – which became home to Gray’s Elevator Corporation until 1957 when it was replaced by its current building on First Avenue N between Washington Boulevard and Biscayne Boulevard. Gray also founded Lighthouse Electric Light Company which served various destinations around the bayfront before going bankrupt in 1912; however their remains can be seen at 103rd Place NE just east of I-395 near US 1A Exit 5B).
