In 1924, residents voted to change the name to "Miami" after Mayor Manuel López Miranda's wife María Cristina Rivera de la Rúa y Martínez (1887-1964). The annexation of neighboring towns and villages led to changes to zoning laws that allowed developers to build larger tracts within designated areas; this created Coconut Grove and Westchester Hills neighborhoods that were adjacent but separate from Miami Gardens until 1960 when they all became one unit through annexation
