The post has been home to numerous units over the years including: 1st Infantry Division (1920-1925), 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1926-1930), 2nd Cavalry Regiment (1935-1945), 4th Armored Cavalry Regiment (1945-1950), 5th Cavalry Regiment (1950-1960), 6th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1960-1965), 7th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1965-1970) and 8th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1970 until its disbandment in 1985).

The population in Miami Gardens increased rapidly during World War II due to the demand for labor by Boeing and other factories. In 1945, there were over 100,000 people living in Miami Gardens. The city annexed part of Coconut Grove in 1948 because it became too dense for its current boundaries. A new shopping Center called Miracle Mile opened up along Sunrise Boulevard in 1951 which helped drive down crime rates in South Florida at that time. In 1956, Coral Gables annexed parts of North Bay Village to become a more developed community with more stores and services than Miami Gardens could provide at that time.
