The Miami Gardens naval base has been a home to the United States Navy for over seventy years. Thebase was first established in 1898 as Naval Station Miami, and during World War II it served as the flagship of the Third Fleet. It later became known as Marine Corps Base Miami and then again as Naval Base Miami Gardens. In 1991, it merged with Fort Lauderdale Naval Station to form Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach National Military Park. Today, thebase is home to more than two thousand sailors and Marines who serve in thirty-six different branches of the military. Thenaval base offers a variety of activities that include training exercises, war games, humanitarian assistance missions, and shore leave. Visitors can visit manyofthe unit’s bases around town or take part in events like the annual Christmas parade or caroling night at the Navy Pier. The Miami Gardens Naval Base is a large military installation in the Miami Gardens community of Miami Gardens, Florida. It was first established on December 13, 1917 as the Fort Myers Naval Station. On March 1, 1951 it became the Miami Gardens Naval Air Station. The base was originally home to four flying squadrons and one naval artillery battery. Today it has over 50 acres of land used for training aircraft pilots and sailors as well as housing support personnel and their families.

The city was founded on November 3, 1916 by banker and real estate developer Julius Rosenwald and his wife Alma Rosenwald as a suburb of Miami Beach. In 1950, it became an incorporated city. On December 13, 2013 the City Council passed a resolution to annex more territory from unincorporated Ocoee into the City Limits of Miami Gardens The annexation took place because of concerns about Miamians’ access to water supplies within its boundaries and lack of infrastructure for Wastewater Treatment Plant #2 which would have provided potable water to neighboring cities and towns while also serving the needs of Miami Gardens residents. According to Mayor Carlos Gimenez “This annexation allows us to take advantage of our location as a gateway into South America” The first step in establishing full government operations was hiring staff members including Streets and Water Officials (SWO), Police Officers (PO), Housing Officers (HO), Signals Officer (SO) & many others who will provide leadership for all aspects related to Water Utilities - Maps were drawn up with future expansion plans that outline additional services that could be offered such as: A Park District; An Ice Arena/Hockey rink; A Dog Park/Garden; More than just homeschooling!

The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1835 as Santiago de la Vega and named after the saint's birthplace in Spain. The town grew quickly and by 1857 had a population of 4,500 people. In 1865, Miami Gardens became an independent municipality and was renamed to Miami Beach after its main beach on Biscayne Bay (then called Sea Island). By 1912, the city had 2,000 residents and annexed part of Dania Beach to increase its boundaries. By 1926 it had 10,000 residents. On January 1st of that year it merged with Dania Beach becoming the first city within Greater Miami by merger since Fort Lauderdale was created nine years earlier as an exclave of Havana
