The Miami Gardens Naval Shipyard was a naval ammunition and shipbuilding facility in the city of Miami Gardens, Florida. It was used from 1903 to 1959 for the construction of navy ships. The Navy's first vessel, USS Fenton (AO-1), was built here in 1903. In World War II, it became a United States Army airfield and then a United States Marine Corps airbase before being used as the Navy'sMIAMI GARDENS shipyard until 1959. The shipyard produced more than 100 warships, including six U.S. Navys carriers: the USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Lexington (CV-12), USS Yorktown (CV-8), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-72), andUSS Coral Sea (CVA-43). Three British destroyers were also built here: HMS Hermes, HMS Erebus, and HMS Terror. The plant closed in 1959 but still preserves many of its relics including an oversize powder magazine that can hold up to 1 million rounds per minute. Today, the Miami Gardens Naval Shipyard Museum is open every day from 9am to 5pm with exhibits on naval history from prehistory to modern times. Admission is free for all visitors!

In 1969 it annexed adjacent unincorporated communities including Cutler Hills and Parkland Lakes while expanding into what is now northbound I-5 near downtown; this annexation caused some residents to leave their homes for fear that they would be taken away from them without due process or compensation. Miami Gardens was founded on December 15, 1894 by the Miami Company. The name of the company came from a swamp in the area which had been drained and improved for use as a citrus plantation. In 1895, two brothers, J.C. and Wm. Brickell, bought the plantation and started to grow oranges there. They also began to develop a sugar cane refinery nearby. In 1916, Miami Electric Railway was organized to provide service between Miami Beach and downtown Miami. The railway was built on land that had been purchased by James Laughlin from J.P Morgan & Co.. The first train ran on November 16th of that year! On October 10th of 1923, President Coolidge announced his intention to nationalize American banks and create the New York Federal Reserve System in order to prevent another depression during his term as president. This caused a great deal of excitement in the citrus industry as it signaled an end to numerous years of monopoly by certain industries! The final touches were being put together for what would become known as "The Great Orange Strike" when it actually happened on February 5th of 1924! This large-scale strike against forced labor occurred because many workers felt they were not getting their fair share of the profits generated from Citrusland's production! It is estimated that over 100,000 jobs were lost during this time period as a result of inadequate wages and working conditions!
