The Miami Lakes Army Ammunition Plant was built in 1958 and is the oldest armaments plant in the United States. The plant manufactures rounds for the U.S. military, as well as ammunition for other countries. Today, the Miami LakesArmy Ammunition Plant produces over 1 million rounds of munitions a year, including more than 700 tons of depleted uranium munitions. Depleted uranium is an incendiary explosive that has been proven to cause birth defects in humans and other animals when ingested. In 2006, Congress passed a law authorizing the Miami Lakes Army Ammunition Plant to produce 600 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel every year from 2021 through 2024. This move will help reduce fallout from nuclear accidents across America by disposing of unused nuclear material safely and securely.

Miami Lakes is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the shore of Miami Lake and has a population of about 1,500 people. The town was first established in 1892 by Italian immigrants. The community was originally named "Benton" after one of the founders of the town, Luigi Benton. In 1899, the name was changed to "Miami Lakes" because it was near Miami Beach at that time. In 1912, Miami Lakes became part of what is now Wynwood Township in Dade County. In 1946, Miami Lakes became an unincorporated community within Dade County and remains so today. Since its inception as a small town, Miami Lakes has seen many changes over time. The Miami Lakes area, located in the southwestern corner of Miami-Dade County, was settled by African Americans in the early 1800s. The first white settler, Captain George Rogers Clark, arrived in 1802 and named the area Miami after his native town of Miamisburg, Ohio. The name was anglicized to Miami and it remained that way until 1959 when it was changed to its current name of Miami Lakes due to its proximity to Lakeland Ranch. In 1960, a golf course was opened on the east side of the lakeshore and has been popular with locals and visitors ever since. The earliest settlers were German immigrants who arrived in 1786. By 1820, there were over 50 families living in what is now Miami Lakes. Most of these immigrants came from Bavaria and Prussia because these areas had rich soil and good transportation connections. They built homes made out of logs or cobblestone into which they added their own family members’ belongings. Many Germans also worked on plantations near Tampa Bay where they produced sugar cane for shipment back home. In 1837, a group of American farmers founded Peninsular Golf Club at mile marker 521 on US 1 near present-day Pembroke Pines Boulevard in Doral Heights; this club became one of the most popular golf courses in South Florida until it closed its doors in 1984 due to declining membership rates. At that time, Peninsular had a par-72 layout measuring 7355 yards with 36 holes (aided by bunkers). Today only two holes remain (the other being an 8th hole that leads down a hill), making Peninsular one of the smallest golf courses remaining within GreaterMiami Area boundaries today – second only to Palm Beach Country Club which is located just outside downtown Fort Lauderdale proper! The original clubhouse still stands as a charming brick building on Eagle Dr., close to Interstate 95/SR 27 southbound exit toll plaza #1 off US 1 northbound exit #4A off I-95/SR 277E! Lago Vista developed around this same time as well – becoming one of South Florida’s most prestigious addresses for weekend getaways during this period according to author Joe Corona (1996). This upscale community sat atop large tracts of land then lying between Biscayne Bay and Ipanema Peninsula along Hollywood Blvd., offering stunning views towards both Clearwater Harbour and downtown Miami proper with no traffic congestion whatsoever! In fact, many residents referred to Lago Vista as “the best place ever” because even though it neighboured some high-end residences such as Coral Gables (just east across Hollywood Blvd.), Manalapan (northwest adjacent to WDW), Tom Cruise’s St Petersburg beachfront estate [known then as Pinellas County], etc., all within easy driving distance (!), you never felt like you were ‘in exile’ or ‘away from everything’ whenever visiting Lago Vista – despite residing right next door! With rapid population growth throughout mainland South Florida during the late 19th century due largely to industrialization & urbanization elsewhere throughout Florida (& other southeastern states), much attention turned towards developing new & more spacious towns & villages around our major metropolises thru annexation process; thus began our ongoing "city growth" trend hereabouts thru annexation efforts undertaken by various city commissioners throughout those days (& later thru state legislature). Indeed concentrationcampual restrictions placed upon certain key West Indian communities preceding relocation via expropriation resulted…Thus began long term ghettoization plans amongst African American Immigrants prior thereto resulting numerous mass incarceration sentences handed out herein unto countless locked up black citizens during prewar years……………..
