Miami Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The CDP includes the villages of Bay Harbour Village, Biscayne Bay Village, and Cutler Heights. According to the 2000 US Census there were 1,953 people in Miami Lakes CDP who reported being of Hispanic or Latino origin. This increased to 2,711 by the 2010 census. Most residents are descendants of Spanish settlers who arrived in South Florida during the 18th century; others are recent immigrants from India and other countries in Latin America and Asia. Among its many cultural attractions are several libraries with rare books on Cuban history: one open every day from 9am to 5pm (the hours vary depending on week); an art gallery that features limited shows each month; a botanical garden with more than 100 different types of plants; as well as numerous restaurants including two branches of Bob’s Burger Joint which have been mentioned on food critic Gordon Ramsay’s program “Hell's Kitchen".

It wasn’t until the late 18th century that coffee began to be exported to Europe, where it gained a reputation for being smooth and tarred with a bitter taste.
Miami Lakes was developed in the early 1800s as a result of the efforts of Spanish missionaries. The area that now includes Miami Lakes was first settled by Indian peoples, who were then hunted and killed by white settlers. In 1821, Captain Manuel Dominguez discovered what is now Miami Lakes while exploring the Florida coast. He named it after Santiago de Cuba, one of his ships. The first European to visit Miami Lakes was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1795. A French trader, he explored the region and named it for José de la Motte Conti (1720-1794), an author and explorer in South America who had visited Havana on several occasions during the mid-19th century. After Point du Sable's voyage, many other Europeans followed suit, founding settlements along the Gulf Stream in what is now Greater Orlando County – including Fort Myers (founded 1798), Kissimmee (1801), Sanford (1802) and Winter Garden (1807). In 1806, General James Kenedy founded Jacksonville on what is now Jacksonville Beach. The Stonington brothers built a mill at Miami Lakes in 1827; this mill became known as "Kenedy's Mill". The town grew rapidly because of its connections to maritime trade and its location near two major shipping ports: Naples on the Naples Peninsula and Tampa on Hillsborough Bay. By 1830, Miami Lakes had a population of 2200 residents and was considered one of Tampa's "seedier" areas. During Seminole Wars between Spain and Native Americans from Florida, parts of present-day Orange County were used as battlefields or landing points for Native American warriors seeking refuge across Lake Okeechobee from Spanish forces under Colonel Palo Alto y Menéndez de Avilés. As part of this conflict, some Native Americans lost their homes and possessions when they were forced westward into new landmass called Indian Territory by Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War following Santa Clara Pueblo’s resistance to Mexico’s orders to cede New Mexico territory to United States control under President George Washington’s Proclamation “On Behalf Of All Nations” on November 15th, 1847 . Many Natives also went onto become refugees within our own community which gradually increased over time with families living together until eventually tearing apart due to religious differences with neighboring churches existing outside traditional tribal boundaries Today we have descendants living all around us but still maintain strong ties with their ancestors
In 1924, the Miami Lakes Company was formed to develop and sell water rights in the area. The company built a dam on the Miami River and began selling water to farmers and people in the area. In 1933, the company built a second dam on the Miami River, which became known as "The Big D". The company continued to sell water until 1942 when it merged with another company to form United States Water.
