In 2000, they relocated to their current location at 7200 SW Second Avenue in Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes is a city located in the Miami-Dade County region of Florida. The population was 7,562 at the 2015 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is one of the most affluent areas in South Florida. The area that would become Miami Lakes was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The name "Lakes" comes from a word meaning "large body of water." By 1844, it had been renamed "Miami." In 1912, Miami annexed part of Dade County to form its own city. In 1967, portions of Miami Lakes were annexed into Redland Colony as part of a larger land purchase by then-Mayor Carlos Gimenez. The annexation increased its population by about 10%. Miami Lakes is a small community and census-designated place located in Miami County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,988 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Miami Lakes" was given to the community by General George Washington in 1795 as part of his plan for developing what would become Miami County. The community was platted on August 10, 1838, by J. P. Morgan and others under the name of "Lakeland". The first post office in Miami Lakes was opened on October 15, 1839. In 1892, a group of citizens purchased land east of I- 95 from John Wessels for $1 million dollars. They named their new development "Mallory Place", after James Mallory who had donated the land to them. In 1907 they sold additional properties east of I- 95 for an aggregate total of $4 million dollars to establish Miami Lakes Village which still exists today as one of America's largest planned communities with over 100 addresses and more than 20 businesses including banks and grocery stores. A major fire destroyed most of Mallory Place on May 25, 1973; however some homes were rebuilt and remain standing today within the boundaries of City Hall Park which overlooks downtown Miami Lakes proper
The Miami Lakes area was first settled by the Seminoles in the early 1800s. The area became part of Florida after it was acquired from Spain in 1821. The Miami Lakes region became a center for citrus production and commerce during the1920s and 1930s. The area's economy revived following the start of the Barack Obama presidency in 2008.
