As part of this change, all city and village governments within both districts were transferred to new status as unincorporated communities within Wilton Park municipality limits. In 1984, Hurricane Andrew struck south Florida and destroyed most homes in Miami Lakes. Many people who lived here during that time found temporary housing in nearby cities such as Fort Lauderdale and South Beach while they rebuilt their homes. Today, many people living in Miami Lakes enjoy its natural gas powered generators which provide power through Independent System Operator (ISO) contracted electricity providers that serve customers throughout southern Broward County
Miami Lakes was founded by the Miami Indians in 1835. The first white settlers arrived in 1836 and named the area Miami after Andrew Jackson, who had been president at the time. In 1840, a post office was established at Miami Lakes and remained in operation until 1898.
