Marines have also donated all sorts of items such as radios, coffee machines, tents, vehicles and even furniture to local businesses over the years! As development continued along these waterways and more people moved into these areas, the name "Miami Lakes" came to be associated with all of these developments as one word (albeit often used separately for each). Today, most people who live in or visit Miami Lakes refer to it simply as "the community." In recent years, though the community has experienced minor growth (+3% between 2000 and 2010), it remains a highly visible – if quietly isolated – slice of South Florida that nonetheless manages to maintain an impressive level of character and individuality. Miami Lakes, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 8,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. The town was settled by Irish immigrants in the early 1800s and named after Mount Pleasant on the border of Ireland and New York. The name "Lakes" came from their belief that the water there was so clear that it would give anyone bold enough to try swimming its depths a good scare. In 1892, a group of businessmen pooled their money to purchase 2,500 acres (1 km2) of land adjacent to what is now Miami Lakes Boulevard and Riverside Drive. They named their new development "Miami Lakes". At first, only vacationers because no one lived there permanently. In 1912, developers bought an additional 1,000 acres (4 km2) for $15 per acre (0.79 hectares). The original developer had died before he could come forward with his share of the proceeds from this sale. The town's first school opened in 1916 as Broward School #1 on Northwest First Street between Coconut Grove Boulevard and Northwest Third Street in north Miami Lakes
In the late 1800s, Miami Lakes was a small community located in central Florida. It was founded by the Lipinski family and around 1900 it had about 50 residents. In 1922, Miami Lakes became part of Dade County after being granted to it by the Legislature. The town experienced some growth during World War II as many GIs stayed in the area for winter quarters. By 1990, Miami Lakes had about 350 residents and was home to one of the two schools in Dade County. However, due to population loss and infrastructure decline over the past few years, Miami Lakes is now an only-small-town with a population of just under 100 people
