Since the early 1900s, Miami Lakes has been home to a national guard detachment. The first unit was organized in 1912 and served as part of the Florida National Guard. In 1938, the detachments became an autonomous corps within the Florida National Guard under the command of the governor. The Miami Lakes detachment is composed of troops from all over Florida, including Ft. Lauderdale and Broward County. It participates in various military campaigns throughout the year and often provides security for civic events or parades. Additionally, it offers educational opportunities to troops stationed here. The gift history of this detachment can be traced back to World War I when soldiers from Ft. Lauderdale donated food and clothing to help support Allied forces in Europe. In World War II, Miami Lakes provided troops for both Canada and Naples, Italy respectively. After the war ended, many soldiers remained in Florida but also retired here with their families and formed new units that continue serving today- such as Company H (Hollywood) which still meets every Fourth of July at Marlins Park! Unit 4-A (Miami Lakes) was activated on September 20th 1951 during Operation Neptune’s Spear which involved U2 pilots flying over North Korea during what is known as “the Korean Incident”; later that year it was renamed D Squadron after its commanding officer General Wade Dillard who died suddenly while on active duty in 1961). With such a long history + present service capabilities these days you can imagine just how popular our units are with locals & visitors alike!

The Miami Lakes National Guard was organized on December 15, 1941. The unit was activated on February 14, 1942 and served in World War II. After the war, the Miami Lakes National Guard was disbanded on September 30, 1945.
During the 1800s Miami Lakes was a thriving community and today it remains an important commercial center in the region. With its well-preserved architecture, lush landscape, and prime location within walking distance of many shopping malls and restaurants, Miami Lakes is a must-see for any visitor to the area. The name Miami Lakes comes from the two lakes that form the town's centerpiece - Crystal Lake and Banning Lake. These bodies of water originally belonged to Indian Chief Miami who resided in what is now known asMiami Lakes. The small community near these lakes was first settled by Methodists in 1834. By 1851, most of this village had been destroyed by fire caused by lightning strike. However, new settlers were soon attracted to this peaceful locale and development began immediately on the north side of Banning Lake which became known as "Old Town." In 1853, a store called "The Grapes" opened up on Commerce Street in Old Town and quickly became one of the most successful businesses in town. This business thrived until 1870 when it burned down due to an error while calculating inventory taxes. In 1875 another store called The Mill opened up across from The Grapes which continue to be recognized as one of Miami Lakes' finest landmarks today. However, nothing could take away the legacy of both these stores – they remain iconic symbols of Miami Lakes history and commerce today! Although Old Town was briefly abandoned during Prohibition efforts (a time when many businesses closed due to prohibition), activity resumed shortly thereafter with a new grocery store being built next door at 9th Avenue and Merchants Road (known then as Fourth Street). This store continued operations until 1973 when it was destroyed by fire! Continued growth followed throughout this period with several other retail establishments opening up including two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company & Hennepin Savings Bank) in 1907; an insurance company called American Life Insurance Company in 1922; a doctor’s office in 1925; a gas station/convenience storecalled Joplin’s Stop Shop between 1928-1929; relocated amusement park Pleasure Pier Corporation operating out of Dingwall Hall starting on July 15th 1929 until its closure on May 3rd 1935 citing budget expenditures only; another grocery store operated independently at 424 W Jefferson Blvd.; post office from 1926-1927; movie theater openings with Regal Cinemas beginning 1927 outgrowing Dingwall Hall resulting in replacement of Pleasure Pier Corporation facility becoming Regal Hollywood Theatre opening December 6th 1927 finally closing February 5th 1936 having played over 1,000 movies! And finally there has been continuous redevelopment including addition or renovation of numerous homesites throughout much recent history making Miami Lakes one very active commercial center!

National Guard gifts can be traced back to 1775 when Continental Army soldiers received “gift baskets” filled with food and clothing from Philadelphia merchants. These gift baskets were an important symbol of support for the troops and helped keep them fed and clothed during wartime. Over time, various national guard gifts were given as thank-yous or rewards for service. Some examples include: In 1892, President Grover Cleveland created the first national guard unit in Illinois using donated soldiers from New York City's 1st Battalion of Infantry Regiment (NYCGI). The NYCGI was disbanded in 1898 but its spirit live on through modern day units such as Buffalo Soldier Infantry Museum & Museum Association’s 139th Regiment Armory Company (1917-present) which commemorates NYCGIs who served during World War I & II; Albany County Sheriff’s Department National Guard Unit which guards county facilities; New York State Military Militia Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2017 at 5th Avenue Armory; Governors Day 2019 Battle Flag display at Garrison Hall – Albany; Governors Day 2019 Banner Display at Capital Parkade – Albany Today, there are over 350 units across America that serve your community with pride! Miami Lakes is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is the largest community in Dade County by land area. The first permanent settler in Miami Lakes was Isaac Newton who arrived on July 8, 1836. Newton's wife, Mary Ann Moody, also landed there on one of three boats that transported settlers from Key West to Fort Lauderdale Landing on September 17, 1836. In 1839, George Washington Vanderbilt donated land to build a phosphate mine near present day Miami Lakes after making an unsuccessful bid for control of the Spanish sugar cane plantation Bahia de las Americas in Cuba. The Vanderbilt Mine became the first quarrying and processing site for phosphate rock in south Florida. On November 1, 1886, a post office called "Miami Lakes" was established at a location about 12 miles east of present day Doral Heights off State Road 527 southwest of Everglades National Park which later became known as Uptown/Doral Boulevard. The name Miami Lakes was changed to its current form on January 1st 1898 when it amalgamated with other villages located within Dade County includingacknowledged incorporated village of Cutler Bay In 1906 Daniel Boone Way opened up as an all-weather road from Coconut Grove through Doral Heights into mainland Miami Lakes Township (later Coral Gables). In 1911 Route 66 reached its climax via this route when two lanes connected Cutler Bay with Homestead along I-95 just outside Palm Beach County
Miami Lakes was created by the Miami and Erie Canal Company in 1825. The company built a canal from the St. Johns River to Miami, Florida.
