These bases were home to strategic bombers such as Boeing B-29s and Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters during World War II; they have been mothballed or converted over time into other uses.

Miami Lakes was a small community in Miami County, Florida, located east of the city of Miami. The community was established in the early 1920s as a result of the annexation of nearby West Kendall by Miami. In 1932, it was renamed to honor General George C. Marshall and his role in World War II. The population peaked at 375 in 1960 and declined to 190 by 1970 due to suburbanization and other factors. Today, only a few hundred people live there. The area that is now Miami Lakes was first inhabited by the Timucua Nation, who were forced out of their land during Spanish colonial rule. A group of British colonists arrived in 1763 and founded Fort Lauderdale on Biscayne Bay; they later sold the land to the Timucua for $2 million. The first white settlers arrived in 1827 when John Nicholson built a cabin on what is now Northwest 64th Street near present-day Coral Gables; he named it Miami Lakes after his home town of Melbourne, England. By 1830, about 20 people lived there; most were farmers or mechanics working for local plantations such as those run by Manuel de la Costa y Valdés (the founder of Vedderland). In 1894, William Haines bought part ofcker from José Gomez y Martínez for $5 per acre; Haines renamed it Coconut Grove after his plantation on Jupiter Bay outside Havana, Cuba (now part of Miami). By 1912, Coconut Grove had grown to over 100 acres; it included a marketplace with market stalls along Northwest 57th Street and Northwest First AvenueNW. In 1916–17 two brothers—Willis Dwayne Day and Harry Phillips— Purchased 640 acres west of Coconut Grove from José Gomez y Martínez for $4 per acre ( approx . . . today's NW 107th street between Park Avenue South and Roosevelt Road) which then became known as "Miami Lakes". They devoted their efforts to developing this valuable new piece of real estate into an attractive community with schools and churches dotting its landscape like stars around wagon wheels... After many years hard work they finally achieved their dream home in 1922 when they annexed 4 other small villages: West Kendall (then called Kendall Heights), North Kendall Beach/Marina District/Shorewood Estates/Coral Gables Village/Eastchester Manor/Westchester Manor East etc., making an almost perfect circle surrounded by lush gardens complete with pool & tennis courts! With these 5 additions they brought development totalizing 281 homes within 2 miles! And just because all these homes were added together doesn't make them any less special today because each one has its own unique history that sets it apart from any others!
In 1875, Florida was acquired from Mexico by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area that would become Miami Lakes was first settled in the 1840s by Miwok Indians. In 1865, a group of Englishmen named John Cockerill purchased land in what is now Miami Lakes and built a cabin there. By 1881, Cockerill had developed a small citrus industry on his tract and began to sell juice to local businesses. In 1902, he sold his business to J.B. White who founded the Coral Gables-Miami Company which manufactured televisions and other electronics products in Miami Lakes until 1984 when it relocated its operations to North Korea.
