The Miami Shores, Florida Army Garrison was activated on October 16th, 1941. The unit was redesignated the 1st Infantry Division on November 8th, 1941. During World War II the regiment served in North Africa and Europe. In 1945 they returned home to serve in the United States occupation of Japan. On May 9th, 1946 the division was re-designated as the 5th Infantry Division and activated at Fort Sam Houston National Monument in San Antonio Texas. During their time with this division they were responsible for multiple campaigns includingOperation Varsity which led to Texas' annexation into the United States;Operation Neptune's Spear which destroyed numerous nuclear weapons sites during OperationCriticalmass; andInchon which successfully defended against an amphibious landing by Japanese forces at Inchon Harbor. Despite these successes they were disbanded on September 17th, 1950 due to budget cuts.
Miami Shores is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 4,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Miami Shores was first settled by Native American nations and their descendants in the late 18th century. A post office called "New Point" was established in 1795, and remained in operation until 1892. In 1898, sections of what are now Miami Shores and Cutler Bay were annexed to Dade County as part of the ongoing process of creating Greater Miami. In 1927, the community of Cutler Bay merged with Miami Shores to form one village. The merger took place because both villages had similar demographics: Both were rural areas with few white residents; both were located on sound waves; and both wanted access to services provided by county government buildings in downtown Miami. At its peak, Cutler Bay had a population of 1,200 people andMiami Shores had a population of 3,000 people

Miami Shores was a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Miami Shores was C.H. Stephenson, who arrived on July 24, 1887 with his family from Iowa. In 1888 Wm Henson bought land and built a cabin where he still lives today as a nostalgic landmark known as "The White House." In 1902 Maud Murdock founded the first post office in Miami Shores and it operated until 1941 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail volume. The only mailbox left in town is located at 6th Street and Meridian Avenue (now Dixie Highway). In 1925 Averill Colfax opened a grocery store on Northwest First Street which became one of the most successful groceries in Miami-Dade County and remains open to this day as Welly's Grocery Store #1. A plaque honoring Mr. Colfax can be found at his former business location on NW First Street near Broward Boulevard.(former Business Name: Averill Colfax & Co.) In 1927 Driggs Piggott opened what would become one of the most popular restaurants in town – Piggott's Grill – becoming an icon for local cuisine throughout its years of operation.Today that restaurant remains open as Piggott's Grille and offers breakfast, lunchtime menus including seafood items, Italian tapas dishes or chicken/waffles.,and dinner options such as steakhouse quality food or pizza ovens international style with unique toppings available nightly! Driggs Piggott had also started a small truck stop right next to his restaurant serving gasoline, cigarettes and other refreshments for customers along Northwest First Street! This shop survived into the 21st century being called 'Driggs' Truck Stop'. Today you can find remnants from this shop all around downtown - inside ousted City Hall building (No longer used) now parking lot behind Roy Rogers Auto parts store on NW Second Ave., across from BP station on Third Ave., NEXT TO HEALTHY CHOICE ON EAST 3RD STREET!
