The Miami Shores military community has been supportive of the United States Armed Forces since World War II. The Miami Shores community is home to over 21,000 active and retired military members who have served in a variety of roles from coast to coast. One of the most longstanding relationships between the Miami Shores military community and the US Military is through member-to-member gifting. In 1957, when US First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy announced her husband's decision to become President, many in the Miami Shores military community rallied behind him. The community was named after Miami Beach on the southern coast of Key Biscayne Peninsula in 1926. The name is derived from "Shore" as it appeared on deeds for land in 1927 and 1928 which were recorded by the U.S. Coast Guard. "Biscayne" means "Island of Many Isles" and refers to both the peninsula's many bays and its key road junction with South Beach on Miami's east side According to historian John Ahernuk: In 1925, developer Harry Weisman purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of undevelopedKey Biscayne Peninsula adjacent to South Beach from millionaire Hugh Hefner for $2 million (). Weisman had plans to create a resort community that would include luxury hotels, an amusement park, tennis courts, a yacht basin and several other features typical of then- fashionable Miami/Dade County communities such as Coral Gables (), Kendall (), Coconut Grove () and Plantation Village (). However, due to World War II shortages of building materials and labor (due partly to rationing), Weisman abandoned his ideas in 1946 when he sold all his assets including the development rights back to Hefner for only $30,000 (). Since then Miami Shores has experienced steady growth with 3 annexations: In 1978 it became portion of Doral; In 1991 it became part of nearby Pompano Beach; And In 2002 it became a municipal unit within Broward County . According to 2010 census data there are now 14 housing developments totaling over 1,500 residences within a perimeter radius covering an area measuring just over . The Neighborhood Watch organization “Miamianshores” formed in early 2003 has been credited with helping keep crime rates low since their inception while also working closely with law enforcement officials throughout the municipality."
