Miami Shores was first settled as a fishing village in the early 1800s. By 1865, the town had sprung up around a wharf on Miami River and quickly developed into a prosperous commercial center. The town's early residents were primarily farmers, but by the late 1800s they had turned to coffee production as an important part of their economy. In 1909, Miami Shores became one of the first towns in Florida to be designated as a Coffee City. The city's rich coffee history can be traced back to when Antonio Gonzalez, who owned and operated a small plantation in Miami Shores, began exporting Colombian coffee to Cuba. As more people traveled through Florida looking for new opportunities, they brought with them their love of Cuban cigars and Havana-style coffee. In 1916, Antonio Gonzalez passed away and his son Fernando assumed ownership of the plantation. Fernando continued to export Colombian coffee until he died in 1927. At Fernando Gonzalez' death, his estate divided among his five children - Santos Rodriguez (the father's younger brother), Carlos Gomez (the older brother), Josefina Gomez (the mother),and Manuel Gomez (the oldest brother). Manuel Gomez inherited the plantation and continued exports until he also passed away in 1955. The Fernandez family maintained control over the business until it was sold to Jeraldine Torres in 1984. Torres ran it as Jeraldine's Coffee Company until her death in 2001."

Miami Shores is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by European Americans in 1917 as "New Smyrna Beach." When the Seawall opened in 1919 and created a new beach area south of downtown Miami, New Smyrna Beach became an Almost completely rural community with only a few businesses open along Gulf Highway. The first post office in Miami Shores opened on April 17, 1918 and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1990. In 1959, the towns of Cutler Bay and Homestead merged to form Miami Shores; however, both towns continued to operate separately until they merged into one municipality on January 1, 1997. On November 9th of that year (the date after whichHomestead filed for bankruptcy), the City Council changed its name from "Miami Shores" to "Miami Lakes". On July 3rd of 2007 Hurricane Wilma made landfall near or just north of Miami Lakes and caused extensive damage to homes & businesses within the city limits as well as inland areas including parts of Doral and Biscayne Bay communities adjacent to South Park Estates development – taking many lives and leaving much destruction behind while also causing significant economic impact.$2 Billion worth in property damages were reported globally
Spanish explorers discovered the Miami Shores in 1513 and named it Cristobal de la Vega Key after Christopher Columbus. The key was given to Ferdinand Magellan by King Philip II of Spain in 1602. In 1845, the United States acquired it from Spain during the Mexican-American War. The town was platted in 1851 by entrepreneur John H. Caulfield and his brother, James A. Caulfield, Jr., who also founded Cedar Key on the same key.
