Miami Shores, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The Town of Miami Shores was established on November 4, 1892 by Judge Edward Harker and his wife Julia Peele as a place where they could fish and boat to their plantation in Cutler Bay. In 1926, after several storms destroyed the docks in Cutler Bay, the town landfills were constructed on what is now SW Third Avenue and Second Street (now NW First Avenue). The first store opened in 1930 on SW Third Avenue and it remained open until 1978 when it closed due to lack of customers. However, local historian Kenneth Ahern has stated that "the store's success may be largely attributed to its location - just two blocks from both I-95 and US 1." The first post office opened in 1922 on NW First Avenue. The current post office building was built in 1951 and replaced an earlier structure that had been damaged by a fire. In 1954 the town council voted to name its high school "Miami Shores Senior High" because residents there had desired this name since before World War II when most of the senior citizens living within sight of school could remember having helped construct one or more schools there. After Hurricane Flora caused extensive damage to much of southern Miami-Dade County in 1966, prior community meetings were held so that replacement names could be chosen which would reflect the damage rather than simply using one preselected name like "Senior High." submissions for replacements included North Shore Junior High School (1945), South Shore JuniorHigh School (1948), Cutler Bay Middle/High School (1964), Sunrise Senior HighSchool (1978) - all but Sunrise being former high schools which had been closed following hurricanes or other disasters. All three names received votes with North Shore emerging as winner late Friday night after storm surge pushed voting away from other finalists overnight; however it was determined late Saturday morning that Sunrise would become South Beach Senior High School effective immediately given property lines separating those two communities have not yet changed significantly since then! In any event seniors throughout south county who attend either HS will continue to refer to their old Alma Mater as "Miami Shores". According to DNA testing performed by Aflac Insurance Company during 2002-2004 studies funded by America West Airlines., most people who live within city limits identify themselves as white while almost all people who live outside city limits identify themselves as black or Hispanic – well over 60% out of total population growth nationally during this time period! This reflects overall social composition Trends seen throughout our country since at least 1964 including changes noted above affecting primarily inner city neighborhoods & suburbs!!!!!!”
