The Miami Shores Naval Station is a major naval facility located in Miami Shores, Florida. The station was established in the early 1930s as an air-launched Short Range Bomber Training Center and has since become the home to the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, logistical support for Operation Neptune Spear, and training for Joint Task Force Hammer. The town was founded by indentured workers from India in 1901 and named after the Miami Shores Resort on the bay. It became a municipality in 1959 and an unincorporated community in 1961. The area now known as Miami Shores was first settled by indentured workers who came to work on sugar plantations in 1859. By 1901, many of these workers had married American women and their children had moved to Miami-Dade County to live with their new families. The name "Miami Shores" was given to the resort because it seemed like a place where people could be free from pollution and noise from other areas of the city. In 1959, when Broward County became part of Miami-Dade County, "Miami Shores" became its official name. According to the 2010 US Census Bureau, Miami Shores has 20,898 residents; 11% are black or African American (the lowest percentage of any municipality in South Florida), 78% are white (the highest percentage of any municipality in South Florida), and 2% are Latino (of any race). This percentage is lower than all but one county within South Florida: Palm Beach County which has 92%. The median household income for this community is $101,955; 5% have incomes over $150k/year while 98% have incomes under $50k/year. There are also high percentages of single parents living here as well as those with no spouse present at all - both groups have much higher percentages than most counties within South Florida. In addition to low incomes overall, there is also wide variation among households according to age: only 31% of residents aged 25 or older have income above poverty level while 69% do so for those aged 65 or over!
