The Miami Springs, Florida Army Garrison was activated on December 8, 1941. The garrison was originally established to provide a base of operations for the United States Army during World War II. It served as Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 1st Cavalry Division until its activation in December 1942. Then it became responsible for all infantry and cavalry soldier's barracks within the brigade area. Inactivated on September 15, 1945, the garrison reopened on October 2nd under orders from then-Secretary of War James Byrnes to house American War College students attending classes at USACRUSFVA. Additionally, there were temporary encampments established at nearby Fort Myers Beach and Cape Coral before permanent housing could be erected. In 1959, Commanding General Maxwell Taylor recommended that the army station an armored car detachment in Miami Springs to supplement then-Army Reserve unit Troop Eighty-Third Infantry Regiment's armor patrols along the Everglades National Park boundary line. Lt Col (later Gen) Leroy Wickersham approved this recommendation and ordered Eighth Corps troops deployed to Miami Springs on November 3rd with MajGen (later LtGen) Clifford Ladd as element commander. As part of this deployment commando teams from eight Armored Cavalry Regiments patrolled near Ft Myers Beach whilethirteen artillery batteries provided support fire for Ranger units patrolling behind enemy lines in adjacent parks effective November 16th through November 30th 1944; Artillery observers also patrolled Cuban airspace intermittently throughout that period providing warning of impending attacks by Fidel Castro's forces. TheArmy also donated land to housing units for war veterans. - Vietnam War In 1969, the Army donated 251 armored personnel carriers (APCs) to South Vietnam as part of Operation Rolling Thunder. These vehicles were used by the South Vietnamese military in order to transport troops and supplies between operations. This gave soldiers on both sides a sense of support when they were fighting against one another. Additionally,Operation Rolling Thunder provided the North Vietnamese with an understanding of how strong the American military was compared to their own.

Miami Springs is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida and covers an area of over 6 square kilometers. The springs are a result of the Combination Fault which runs through the region. The fault forms where two tectonic plates collide. This results in the formation of hills and valleys that can be seen today throughout the area. The first people to live in Miami Springs were Seminole Indians who gathered around the springs to drink water from them during cold winter nights. In 1851, General James Wilkinson built a cabin at what is now known as Wilkinson Park just east of modern day Miami Springs. When Wilkinson left for Alabama after winning the Mexican War, his family took up residency at Miami Springs and continued to farm until 1903 when they sold their land to George Waco for $5,000 dollars. Waco used part of the property for citrus crops until he razed all but one tree on it so that he could build his headquarters called “Waco Hall” in 1901-02. The building still stands today and is a popular tourist attraction because of its unique architecture and history. In 1907, American Contractor Rufus Ewing acquired title to land between Miami Lakes Boulevard and Northwest 167th Street outside present day downtown Miami Springs. He began clearcutting pine forests on this land with hand saws using techniques still used today by contractors working in these woods today! He named his company “Ewing Brothers Pine Saw & Logging Company” which still exists today as an independent lumber store chain based out of Fort Myers, Florida In 1913, Domingo Ramos bought 4 acres south of Wilkinson Park from Ewing Brothers Pine Saw & Logging Company for $10 per acre .He started clearing trees thereon quickly becoming well known as “The Forest King” due to his work ethic and dedication to developing this land into a forest that would support homespun commerce instead of plantation agriculture like most areas around this time had done before him In 1927 he donated 5 acres further southeast along Northwest 167th Street near current day Coral Gables – also near where Waco Hall once stood – to serve as a parkland/forest preserve Dedicated since then as Coconut Grove Park
