Miami Springs, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami Beach–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The springs were discovered by Spanish explorers in 1565 and named "Rio de la Luna" after the moon. The name was changed to "Miamisprings" in 1884 when it became part of Miami Township. In 1912, Miamisprings annexed parts of Sunny Isles Beach and Boca Raton so that they would have a combined population of over 20,000 people. By 1920, Miamispring had reached its current size with 814 residents and land measuring only 3 acres (1 km2). In 1933, Hurricane Flamingo caused widespread damage to homes and businesses in Miami Springs. More than $25 million worth of damage was done to property there alone. The town lost all its business opportunities as a result but managed to rebuild quickly and remain an important community until the late 1990s when it experienced another significant decline in population due to suburbanization and other factors such as increased illegal immigration into the area from Latin America. However, recent revitalization has seen strong growth for Miamispring since 2006 with new development including several properties within walking distance of city hall which continue to bring much-needed economic vitality to the community
