Miami Springs, Florida was founded by the Miami brothers in 1892. The springs were first used to help water cattle and later became a popular resort destination for people from all over the United States. The springs came under control of the Payne family in 1907 and remain in that family’s ownership to this day. In 1923, Miami Springs was renamed Prospect Park after Philip A. Prospect, president of Gulfstream Airlines. The development of Miami Springs began with the construction of three hotels and an amusement park on Broward Boulevard in 1898. The following year saw the opening of the first store at 1001 Naylor Road. By 1905, there were six stores and ninety-six businesses operating in Miami Springs proper. In 1916, properties along Biscayne Bay were acquired for $500,000 and developed into what is now known as South Beach. During World War II, Miami Springs became a major airbase during the war effort due to its location near Fort Myers and its beachfront access points on Biscayne Bay. After the war, many businesses reopened including several supermarkets which helped contribute to a rapid increase in population throughout South Beach between 1951-1957 alone! In 1957, it was decided that South Beach should be reorganized into wards which would then have responsibility for specific areas such as tourism development; this led to major redevelopment projects taking place throughout South Beach over ensuing years culminating in today’s beautiful brick buildings lining Flagler Street south of State Road 706 (the “Biltmore Way”)
