Miami Springs is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and his brothers as a citrus grove on an undeveloped lot near what is now South Beach Boulevard and Northwest Second Street in Overtown. In 1917, the name was changed to Miami Springs after acquainting itself with President Woodrow Wilson while he was visiting the area for vacation. In 1928, Miami Springs amalgamated with two other towns – Cutler Bay and Liberty City – to form the largest municipality west of Tampa Bay without any annexation effort from neighboring municipalities. According to Village History, "It wasn't until 1924 that Miami Springs finally annexed Cutler Bay; it had been trying for years." The annexation helped make Miami Springs one of the most cohesive communities in southern Florida during its early years; prior to annexation there were only a few villages scattered throughout southern Dade County including Hialeah (then called Biscayne), Sunrise Valley, Plantation Key West and Coral Gables (* note: This information comes from oral history interviews conducted by residents of both Cutler Bay and Liberty City who lived through those days). In 1954, due to financial problems brought about by World War II Veterans' Benefits Administration restrictions on liquor sales within rural areas, Miami Springs incorporated as a city under charter No. 5771 which limited voting rights to male citizens over 21 years old owning property worth $50 or more per year at the time of incorporation and no more than five family members living on their property at any given time - all changes necessary due to challenges raised by then Mayor Harry Cromwell with respect to how alcohol could be sold within city limits without violating state law which prohibited liquor sales within unincorporated areas where land values exceeded $50 per acreage (the current limit remains unchanged today). Miami Springs was founded in 1868 by Dr. John H. Wilkinson, who also named the community after his home of Miami, Florida. The population of Miami Springs at its peak was over 2,500 people and it became a small town with a handful of businesses. In the early 1920s the population dwindled to just 100 people as World War I disrupted travel and trade in Florida and many residents left for safer havens such as Tampa or Jacksonville. However, business revived after the war and by 1926 Miami Springs had grown to 476 people with 12 businesses. Business flourished during Prohibition but when prohibition ended in 1933, many bars and restaurants closed due to competition from alcohol-friendly jurisdictions such as Gainesville or Jacksonville. The population slowly declined throughout the 1940s until it peaked at 1,815 in 1950 before slowly declining again through the 1960s and 1970s. In recent decades, Miami Springs has seen an increase in development due to its location within a short driving distance of several major metropolitan areas including Orlando, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Pensacola and Clearwater Beach.
