The Miami Springs Naval Air Station (MINS) was established in 1922. The station became operational as a naval airbase on November 1, 1922 and saw service during the Spanish-American War. It was renamed Naval Air Station Miami Springs on December 12, 1942. The station served primarily as a training ground for pilots of submarines and planes used by the Navy. In 1960 MINS became an active naval airbase with the activation of the Blue Angels squadron. MINS also saw service in Operation Neptune's Spear –the Cuban Missile Crisis –during which time several F-4 Phantom jets were lost. The last significant use of Mins came in 1992 when it was closed effective October 31st due to budget cuts by then-Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. Today, portions of MINS are still used for military purposes such as storage and maintenance areas for ships and aircrafts moored there including two runways that now serve as a portion of US1/SR 95 southbound and US1/SR 95 eastbound between Flagler Street and 4th Avenue South; one hangar has been converted into an offices building for the Miami County Sheriff’s Office; while another hangar is being used as an annex to Coral Gables High School; numerous antennas have been removed from various buildings at Mins over the years making way for housing developments; many abandoned boats can be seen lying around in what once was a large open swimming pool area; while some parts have been renovated into luxury apartments or commercial properties, most notably One MIAMI Plaza tower which currently functions as both a hotel casino spa restaurant and residential property leased to developers totaling more than 1,000 units since its completion in 2004).
