From here he ran a variety of enterprises including sugar cane plantations, citrus fruit orchards, dairy farms, cotton plantations, fishing ponds and private residences until his death in 1916 at age 80 years old (). Captain James A. Wells also named one of Miami's many bridges after him - the A.J. Wells Bridge over Biscayne Bay near where he now lives (originally known as the Captains Bridge). Designed by architect Edward Burnham Jr., it opened to traffic in 1935 and became one of downtown Miami's most famous landmarks (). The bridge has been registered with Historic American Buildings Survey since 1966 ().
