The Gunsmith Shop continued to be open until it closed in 1978 due to lack of customers. It is interesting to note that both Harry Witherspoon and Al White were accomplished shooters who had won numerous awards including being members of the American Rifleman magazine’s national shooting team for 1949-1951 seasons. They also served as executive directors for the NRA from 1967-1978. In recent years, shotgunshooters have started gifting one another more sophisticated firearms such as pistols or shotguns instead of just rifles or shotguns. Some shotgunshooters even go so far as to start contributing money towards charity through their hobby by selling donated rifles or shotguns during local firearm shows or auctions (Lane Bryant). Miami Springs is a small town located in Miami County, Florida. The population was 1,903 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Myers-Cocoa metropolitan area. The town arose from the junction of two small streams which flowed through brackish water near where Fort Myers now stands. When Congress created Miami County in 1835, it included parts of what are now Miami and Lee counties. The original settlers were Creek Indians who had been removed to this area by General Andrew Jackson during the Seminole War. The first building in Miami Springs was a log cabin built by Captain John Smith in 1799 on his island near present day Live Oak Boulevard and US 41A (now State Road 527). In 1854, when James Kenedy bought land east of present day South Bay Boulevard and Indian Head Lane for $2 per acre, he named his new property Spring Hill after Miami Springs, Alabama (then Pensacola), where he had been born in 1784. In 1865, Colonel John Prentice built a small home on what is now University Drive just north ofSpring Hill Cemetery. Colonel Prentice was one of several early developers who brought growth to Spring Hill over time including Major Elisha Gray (1820-1892), Jno Copley Goodwin (1830-1912), Wm Blythe (1840-1925), Hyrum Beall Morse (1850-1937) and others who made Spring Hill one of the most popular tourist destinations around Key West during that era. During World War II much effort was expended to develop spring water for use by soldiers stationed along Florida's eastern coast as well as those fighting on Okinawa Island; however no significant results were achieved until 1945 when work began on pump jacks systems used to draw underground groundwater from wells under various military properties throughout southeastern Florida including SpringHill Cemetery and Camp Blanding naval base waterside supplies depot complex adjoining Camp Blanding airfield northwest of downtown Jacksonville
