The Miami-Dade County military deployment gift history begins in the late 1960s when the United States Army's 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment deployed to Vietnam. The battalion was composed of soldiers from both the U.S. and South Korea, and as a result, many of the Soldiers' gifts were unique and memorable. One Soldier's Gifts That Changed Our Lives In 1969, Sergeant First Class John Witherspoon gave a guitar to Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cushman of Company H (2/7) for his birthday. Lt Col Cushman had been ordered to deploy with his unit to Vietnam due to the open revolt against President Nixon's War in Laos that was taking place at that time. After Sgt Witherspoon sent the gift, William "Bill" Murphy becameLt Col Cushman's personal assistant during his deployment. Bill would later become Command Sergeant Major of 2/7 in 1980 and authoring several books on military service life including "A Soldier’s Guide To Home Defense". In 1990, Captain David Jahn gifted two pieces of art – one an oil painting entitled “Sunshine Boulevard” by Henri Matisse and another called “Atom Bomb Blues” by Jack Kerouac – back home in Virginia to commemorate their yearlong tour together as Marines with 1/5 Marines Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Ponce (LHD 5). The artists would return home in 1992 after completing their combat duty while on assignment off Okinawa Japan as part of Operation Neptune Spear II; paintings measuring over 18 feet long were displayed at Marine Corps Base Quantico before being donated back to VA Beach Museum where they can still be viewed today! Miami, Florida is a city of over eight million people located in the Miami metropolitan area. The city was founded on January 12, 1903 by Cuban refugees who had come to America as part of the 1898-1902 Spanish-American War. The population grew rapidly after World War II when Miami became an international center for entertainment and trade. Today, Miami is one of the most important cultural and economic hubs in South Florida. The first settlers in what is now Miami were passengers on the brigantine Nuestra Senora de la Concepción which sailed from Havana Harbour on December 21st, 1795. Over time, various other ships made trips to the area including two vessels chartered by Captain Juan Ponce de León and named La Belle Américaine and La Floridiana respectively; both arrived at Point Breeze on November 13th, 1513 A.D. After three weeks ashore, Ponce de León set out with his men again for Cuba but this time he found himself north of Havana - probably due to bad weather conditions that week! A group of Englishmen led byCaptain John Hawkins undertook another exploration expedition in 1535 which discovered Key West (present dayFort Lauderdale) and PortMiami (now calledLighthouse Hill). In 1665 Fort Santiago was built at what is now Little Haiti just outside of downtown Miami Beach while Spanish Fort was established in present day Overtown near Biscayne Bay; both were abandoned within a few years because they were not successful at defended against attacks from Native American Cubans who terrorized the area until 1810 C.E.. After gold discoveries at Santa Clara Island off Tampa Bay in 1848 A.D., extensive land speculation began around this new source of wealth with stonemasons building luxurious homes overlooking BiscayneBay while farmers developed small settlements along FlaglerBeach Boulevard southwest of Downtown Miami Beach where today's hotels are located.. In 1861 Congress passed an act authorizing President James Buchanan to purchase 640 square miles (1,000 km²) adjacent to Dade County for use as a new Utopia Park known as “Lahore” or “Florida’s Prairie” – bounded by Southwest Eighth Street on the east side and Sixty-second Avenue westward from Meridian Road southwestward; it contained 5% consideration given to African Americans although they did not have ownership rights like white landowners! This plantation belt region would become known as Overtown/the Entertainment District today! As more foreigners came into this area seeking investment opportunities during these years there were waves of social unrest many times resulting in violence such as the 1899 duma rioting that followed construction projects nearby centered around Navy Pier popularly called “The Forties” following World War I efforts by president Wilson To address increased racial tension across America!. In 1907 Mayor Manuel Diaz purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) near Wynwood Cemetery for public use – becoming only the second person ever to do so!! He also initiated plans for what would eventually become Suncoast Boulevard which paralleled FlaglerBeach Boulevard between Northwest First Street and Northwest Second Street before terminating at Dixie Highway southeast of current day North Moonacht Avenue! This boulevard quickly became a commercial artery through downtown with its first store opening up shop alongsuncoastboulevardin1909! Many famous businesses have been located along Suncoast Boulevard since then including Benetton Centrifugal TV stores(opened1969), J&R Harrison Chevrolet dealerships(opened1971), KFC restaurant(opened1972), Sears Tower office complex(opened1976), Disneyworld amusement park( opened 1996 ), US Open Tennis Championships venue( opened 2002 ).
