The Miami-Dade County Army Base was an American military facility in Miami, Florida. The base was opened in 1942 and served as a training ground for the United States Armed Forces. It closed in 1991. In 1941, the United States War Department decided to establish an army post in Miami due to shortages of troops in other areas of the country. The War Department purchased land at Key Biscayne Boulevard and Ocean Drive, which would become the Miami-Dade County Army Base. The post began operations on September 8, 1942 under the command of Lieutenant General James Doolittle. During World War II, the Miami-Dade County Army Base trained more than 1 million soldiers from all over America and Europe. Additionally, it helped prepare for Operation Overlord by housing thousands of naval personnel and supplies at various locations throughout downtownMiami prior to their departure for Normandy on July 6th 1944. On October 12th 1951, Major General Hurlbut relinquished command of the MIABA to Lieutenant General Milton Eaker after serving there since early 1945. After Major General Hurlbut's retirement from active duty on November 20th 1951 he became Commander Installation Command (CIC) at MIABA until his death on January 5th 1958; then Chief Master Sergeant Frank Jaffe took over as Commanding Officer (CO). From late 1951 through early 1957 CIC operated out of Headquarters Battalion located at barracks #2 adjacent to Coral Gables High School with attached detachments located at Fort Lauderdale Beach Airport (FLL), Pompano Beach Naval Air Station (PONAS), Hollywood Naval Air Station (Hollywood NAS), Westonport Naval Air Station (WESTONPORT NAS) and Plantation Island Naval Air Station (PLANETARY NAS). As part of its continuous effort to improve air traffic control during Operation Neptune's Spear, HQ Squadron 592 activated Composite Unit 601st Tactical Helicopter Wing at MIABA on December 12th 1963 along with additional helicopter squadrons equipped with McDonnell Douglas MH-64E Dolphin helicopters designated Attack Squadron 601st TAWS; these units served together as a unit until disbandment due to budget cuts caused by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara's sequestration plan known as "the Budget Cuts".
