The Coast Guard has been in Miami since 1917. The first Coast Guard station was established in Miami Beach in 1914. The Coast Guard Station at Key Biscayne Waters opened in 1944, and the current station at Miami Beach was built in 1962. In 1967, the Coast Guard Station at Pompano Beach became operational. In 2006, the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office purchased the Coast Guard Station from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for $10 million. The Coast Guard plans to use the station to store confiscated firearms and provide law enforcement officers with training on explosives detection technology. From then until 1966, all gifts were Commandant’s Medals or Commendation Medals of Honor issued by Headquarters Department (later renamed as United States Marine Corps). Polk sent Captain Elisha Bogue with US Marines stationed at Fort Pierce to explore Miami's potential as a commercial center due to its location on the Isthmus of Panama between Colombia and Venezuela – land then under Spanish control. On February 14, 1835, Bogue sighted land which he named "Miami" after Governor Manuel de la Vega y Osorio who had given him permission to explorations near this point along the Keys Peninsula. On July 6, 1837, while exploring Key Largo Harbor by sea off Key Largo’s eastern tip before continuing upriver towards downtown Key West, Commandant Stephen Decatur discovered an abandoned Spanish fortification known as Miramar Castle which lay hidden within mangrove swamp ahead of him on shoreline owned by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés y Costilla; De Vere reported that “the fortifications are old but well built; they have not been used for many years” Shane Noland has shown that this claim may be false because there are no contemporary references to Miramar Castle having ever been located anywhere near present day Miami or anywhere near any modern day ports or beaches.- Source: History Commons - The website where you can access original sources for everything from history to trivia
