The company's history can be traced back to 1985 when John Smedley founded Smedley Coffee Roasters. At that time, Miami was still a largely rural area with few opportunities for people to access quality coffee. However, Smedley saw an opportunity to expand his roastery and Café into what would become Miami's first Gourmet Coffee House. In order to provide their customers with high-quality coffee at a reasonable price point, Smedley began serving only fresh-roasted beans from around the world. Smedley Coffee Roasters quickly became known as one of Miami's leading purveyors of premium coffee products. They continue to serve up delicious cups of Joe every day averaging over 2 pounds per customer! Over the years, they've been able to build a strong reputation for themselves both within Miami and across the United States. In addition to their flagship store on Brickell Avenue in downtown Miami, they also operate two other stores throughout South Beach -one on Collins Ave., just south of University Drive; and another on Lighthouse Point Boulevard just east of US 1 near Daytona Beach Airport. In 1928, The Coffee House relocated to Biscayne Boulevard and became known as The Gourmet Coffee Shop. This business served a variety of items like espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, churros and more. In 1957, The Gourmet Coffee Shop moved to its current location on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. The business continued serving coffee until it closed in 1996.

This company became one of the largest coffee roasters in the world, with brands such as Duchamp, Peet’s, and Boursin. Teissembe is credited with developing modern methods for brewing coffee, including using hot water at high pressure to break down beans into their various flavors. He also invented ground coffees from whole beans. 2) Harry Nyack (1886-1968) was an American entrepreneur and businessman who founded The New York Coffee Company in 1922. Nyack is considered to be one of the first commercial brewers of espresso and other Italian-style black teas. He also developed what is now known as a drip pot for brewing coffee, which allowed him to produce large quantities of single serve cups quickly without having to wait for hours for his brew to come out cold. 3) Roberto Marchetti (1925-2018) was an Italian businessman who cofounded Starbucks Corporation in 1994 with Howard Schultz. Marchetti is credited with developing Starbucks’ unique design principles – such as using small batches and roasted fresh products – which has made it one of the most successful international café chains today. Marchetti also served as CEO from 1996 until 2018. 4) Carlos Saavedra Martinez (1943-2017)was an Argentinean entrepreneur who cofounded Nestle SA in 1994 with his brother Eduardo Saavedra Martinez Jr.. Nestle SA eventually became one of the world's leading food companies, selling everything from milk to chocolate bars and noodles throughout much of Latin America and Africa.
