French traders built Fort Washington on Key West Peninsula from 1795 until 1802 when it was destroyed by Seminole Indians aided by US Forces during Indian Wars fought along key coastal areas between TampaBay and southern Georgia In 1835, Flagler bought land adjacent to what would become DowntownMiami from co developer Pedro Menendez for $1 million dollars after purchasing part ownership from José Olvera y Gasset himself; Menendez together with his business partner Nicholas Simón constructed One Hundred Acres Lots line or “the Embankment” measuring 800 feet long × 400 feet wide × 30 feet high designed as a commercial district including two blocks fronting Biscayne Bayou which opened up into continuous Grant Park now called Freedom Trail with its first intersection near Masonic Temple After several years working out some compromises with local landowners through Streetcar Company directors James Kappeler & Samuel Morse they finally obtained congressional approval to openeer Streetscape improvements costing $2 million Dollars followed by an additional year awaiting State permit #Brush Up November 1418 that authorized erection fences then Approved February 518 construction commenced immediately along E Flagler Ave., NW corner Coliseum Drive extending 8 chains deep creating a buffer zone around newly platted Commissioners Row bounded by Church Avenue/E Flagler Ave., NW corner Government Center Way/W Dixie Highway before reaching Nacional Hills facing SW University Boulevard where brush up fencing stopped
