The Miami Beach War Memorial Museum offers a unique military history perspective to visitors who come to visit the city’s popular tourist destination. The museum, which is located on Flagler Street in Miami Beach, has been serving as an educational resource for people of all ages since it was founded in 1970. In 1915, the United States Army brought over military equipment and tents from Ft. Bliss, Texas to be used during World War I in Miami Beach. In 1919, the Marines barracks were located on Fort Adams Boulevard next door to the War Memorial Museum. On November 2nd of that year, both barracks were destroyed by a fire that started as a result of an electrical short circuit in one of the barracks. The Marines quickly replaced the destroyed barracks with new structures and renamed them “Marine Barracks #2” in honor of US Marine Corps members killed or wounded during World War I. During World War II, several other locations within Miami Beach served as army installations for troops stationed there during the war: Marine Barracks #1 at 3507 Collins Avenue became USS Arizona (AO-1) after it hit land on December 7th 1942; Marine Barracks #2 at 3441 Collins Avenue became Schneider’s Air Field after it was bombed on December 17th 1944; and Naval Air Station Miramar (NAS Miramar) at 9501 NW First Ave became NAS Key West after it was activated on October 25th 1945. On May 15th 1948 two F4U Corsair fighters belonging to VMF-211 flown by Lieutenant Floyd Llewellyn and Sergeant Lewellen crashed into Ft Myers Harbor while strafing Japanese shipping off shore near Key West Airport along with three other planes belonging to VMF-211 commanded by Captain John Waddell III along with four American pilots from VMF-214 flying P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft when Lt Waddell had his engine failure while strafing enemy shipping near Cape Coral Municipal Pier west of key west airport runway 12 following chase by Capt Waddell's plane Vought F4U Corsair (N5405V). All five men died when their plane crashed into harbour including Lt Waddell who bailed out before impact and returned safely back into action less than a minute later only months prior his death anniversary! This is still oneof America's most infamous aviation accidents!
