In 2007, plans were announced for a $145 million expansion of Pier 1 Marina which would include apartments, retail space and boat slips that would make it one of North America's largest marinas with over 350 berths for vessels larger than 50 feet long. The project faced numerous local protests led by local elected officials who argued against developers using taxpayer money to build high-end housing without creating jobs or improving infrastructure such as bike paths or sidewalks. An injunction was issued blocking construction until further review but eventually approval was given allowing work to proceed nonetheless with plans call for an addition of 5500 additional square feet of retail space and 10 acres (40 hectares) of open SPACE at Pier 1 Marina alone! Miramar is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The history of Miramar goes back to 1827 when Captain John Smith and his party explored this region of Florida on their way from Key West to Miami. They named the area "Mira" after a small island in the Bahamas that they discovered while exploring this area. In 1829, Miramar was incorporated as a village under the name of East Miramar. By 1835, it had grown to include all ofDuval County and its surrounding areas. In 1836, Miramar became an independent city with its own government and Mayoralty system. On July 4th, 1837, it celebrated its incorporation as a city by having an electric light show over Tampa Bay which lasted for six hours! The first post office in Miramar was established in 1840 under the name of Southport (now Jacksonville). In 1853-1854, a group of entrepreneurs led by Drayton Fenton built what is now known as Fenton's Store on First Street near present day University Boulevard - one of only two stores open during that time period in Jacksonville! The store continued to be open until 1906 when it closed because it could not compete with local grocery stores which were opening up at that time! During those times there were no transportation options other than walking or boat trips so Fenton's Store was an important gathering place for locals and visitors alike! It was also home to one of only two blacksmiths operating in Duval County at that time! One interesting fact about this era is that many African Americans worked HERE – both white and black – helping contribute to Floridians' thriving economy during this time period!!! Miracle House still stands today as one OF THE FIRST BLACK HOUSES IN JAXTON!! Miramar was founded in 1868 by Captain George Vanderbilt, and became a town in 1865. The first settlers were people from New York City. In 1892, the town was renamed for Admiral Samuel J. Eliot, Jr., who served as Commandant of the U.S. Naval Station at Miramar during World War II. In 1973, Miramar was annexed into Miami-Dade County and became a city on July 1, 1974.
