Miramar is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The boundaries of Miramar are not well-defined, but it is most likely that it includes all or portions of both neighborhoods of North Port and Little Harbour. Northport had a population of 11,463 as of the 2000 census; Little Harbour had 9,948 as of the 1990 census. According to local historian Norma Bogan,Miramar began as "Tallahassee Negro Trotters" settlement in 1892 on land that current day State Road 7 offers access to from Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (SR 7). The name "MIRAMAR" was chosen by Mrs. Averell Harriman (headmistress at Duval County High School) because its meaning included "Island in the Harbor." Mrs. Harriman's husband George Mardon connected with sugarcane farming and shipping interests in Tampa Bay and purchased some 400 acres near what is now Town Center Drive in 1922 for $10 per acre ($2 million today). The first post office opened at this site on May 2, 1923 under the name Tullahoma Post Office; Miramar was incorporated on December 1st, 1925 with a population of 356 residents.
