Miramar, Florida is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It was established in 1892 as part of the Jacksonville-based citrus farming area. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. The town is located on State Road A1A about 8 miles (13 km) north of downtown Jacksonville and about 20 miles (32 km) east of St. Petersburg. The first settlers were Dutchmen who arrived in 1795 and named their farm "Hooghlyk." By 1802, Miramar had been platted by Colonel John Smith and named for English Admiral Lord Liverpool's wife, Lady Mary Montero de la Vega y Costilla. In 1892, the Jacksonville–based citrus farming area was divided into two parts: one including Miramar became known as Pinellas County while the other included more land within Miramar boundaries became known as Brevard County. The first post office opened in Miramar on May 1, 1893; it closed on July 14, 1907. In 1924, after many years of discussion and planning by local officials and citizens alike, a new shopping center was built near what is now Interstate 95 close to what is now the community's original square mile (0·9 km²). This building served as the nucleus for what is now called Miracle Mile development which spanned several blocks beginning at SR A1A south to Truman Blvd., east to Atlantic Ave., north to US 1/SR 915/US 301/SR 520 east and west before terminating at I-95 exit 316B just outside of downtown Miracle Mile proper. In 2006-2007 an addition totaling .5 acres (0·2 hectares) adjacent to SR A1A formed an intentionalumpacity golf course designed by PGA TOUR member Tom Fazio that currently offers par 5s ranging from 66 feet (−20 metres) to 275 feet (−100 metres), givingResidents access not only directly off I-95 but also via private roads leading away from I-95 such as CR 1400E which leads northeast towards Jupiter Key National Wildlife Refuge;CR 1300W which leads southeast towards Fort Myers;and PINPoint 300E which leads southwest towards Clearwater Beach through residential neighborhoods until its termination at CR 1400W just outside of downtown Miracle Mile proper
