Miramar is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. The village of Miramar was founded in 1887 by Danish immigrants who named it for their home island of Mirca (now part of Gothenburg, Sweden). The first store opened in 1888 and the first post office in 1889. By 1900, Miramar had a population of 100 people and four churches. In 1916, Miramar incorporated as a town under the name "Mira." Miramar, Florida was founded in 1871 by Capt. George W. Miramar and his wife Anna. The town was named for the Miramar Peninsula on which it is located. The first post office in Miramar opened in 1872. In 1907, the town began to receive electricity from a new power plant built by the Tampa Electric Company. In 1934, Miramar became part of Hillsborough County and was renamed North Hillsborough. It merged with neighboring South Park in 1961 to form Lakeland-Miramar Township. On December 13, 1984, Lakeland-Miramar Township lost its status as a township and reverted back to a county seat when Hillsborough County placed the city of Tampa within that county limits again. In 1990, North Hillsborough became part of Pasco County when it merged with Escambia County; however, Escambia has since regained its status as a separate county seat and remains within Hillsborough County boundaries today.
