In 1835, Miramar was founded by Capt. Augustus King and his wife Rachel. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s, due in part to its location on a navigable Straits of Florida Bay. By 1840, the town had over 100 residents and became known as "the most important seaport on the bay." During the American Civil War, Miramar served as a supply depot for Confederate forces stationed on Cuban soil. In 1865, Miramar was one of several towns in Duval County that were destroyed when Hurricane Flossy struck Tampa Bay. Miramar's economy slumped during the Great Depression, but it regained some momentum in the 1940s and 50s thanks to population growth and new development around it; including a major naval base constructed at miramar airfield in 1951. In 1962, Miramar became part of Hillsborough County when it was created from parts of Duval and Pinellas counties. The city experienced rapid growth after its incorporation as an unincorporated community in 1968; reaching its peak with more than 300 residents by 1990. However, this prosperity came at a cost: jobs lost during the decade-long recession that followed World War II combined with increased traffic congestion caused by new subdivisions being built near the city center.
