In 1951, Harry Laughlin's son Harry Jr., who ran the restaurant until his death in 2002, donated the property to the city of Miramar for use as an open-air park with trails and playground facilities. Today, Miramero is one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations with more than 350 restaurants and hotels vying for visitors' attention. There are also several amusement parks within walking distance including Busch Gardens Tampa Bay (which opened in 1954), SeaWorld Orlando (opened in 1973) and Universal Studios Hollywood (opened in 1984).

Miramar is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 16,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Miramar is home to The Miramar School District which has three schools: Miramar Elementary School, Miramar Intermediate School and Miramar High School. The town was also once a stop on the Underground Railroad. The history of Miramar begins with José de la Cruz y Real who settled in what is now Miramar in 1793. In 1821, elements of General Andrew Jackson's army burned down the old adobe courthouse and plantations in what is now downtown Miramonte for reasons unknown. That same year saw the first permanent settler arrive in this area when Manuel Fontán imported two Negroes from Havana as laborers to help clear land for a rancho he had been working on near present day Monty Key Boulevard and NW Second Street. In 1825, Captain John Sappington platted what would become downtownMiramonte on land that he had purchased from Juan Bautista Alonso de la Vega about four miles northeast of present day Monty Key Boulevard and NW Second Street. This location became known as "Sappington's Square" because it served as an intersection point for two early trails leading into or out of Miami - one traveled east along Fourth Terrace across SW Third Avenue (now NE First Avenue) to CR-1 (then US 1), while the other went south along Fourth Terrace to CR-2 (now NE Second Avenue). By 1826, miradorita (a name derived from Spanish meaning "mirroring bay") had grown up around this square; its inhabitants were chiefly African Americans freed by American troops during the Mexican War who had returned to their homes after serving in Mexico City under General San Miguel de Noriega but were not allowed back into Cuba until after Yorktown surrendered that year. In 1828, Captains John Fenton and George Washington Dennison built Fort Dennison just north of today's downtownMiramonte on HwyA1A (now I-95). A smallpox epidemic began here in 1830 and continued through 1831; however no casualties resulted because Major Gabriel Encinas treated all patients using his own personal powers of healing without any contact with conventional medical treatments then available at that time.
