Miramar, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. It bears the name of a Spanish settlement founded by Diocese of Havana priest, fray Marcos de Miramar in 1693. The town began to gain prominence as a port on the mouth of the river Marlins River and its namesake followed in 1892 when President Grover Cleveland designated it as a Naval Air Station (NAS). NAS Miramar became an international center for naval aviation with its first aircraft taking off from NAS Key West on March 3, 1915. NAS Miramar's legacy continues through present day with many Navy ships docked at NAS Miramar and various airfields around town used by both military and civilian pilots. In addition to the FAA's John F Kennedy National Airport, NAS Miramero is home to Miami-Dade Aviation High School which offers undergraduate and graduate flight training programs; US Coast Guard station which provides maritime law enforcement services; and old shipwreck museum which tells the story of life onshore and offshore at nearby Fort Myers Beach. The history of Miramar goes back before European explorers set foot on American soil. A small Spanish settlement was established near where today’sMiramar stands in 1693 by Father Marcos De Miramero after landing on American shores during his missionary campaign to evangelize Catholics living along what is now known as South Miami-Dade County. Father Marcuse’s group had been sent inland from Cuba by Pope Clement VIII following reports that Spain was engaging in similar practices toward native peoples thereabouts including enslavement and extermination. After landing they erected stockades around their village, naming it San Miguel de la Habana because this was then their only means of exportation other than sending food items back to Cuba via sea orlanding heretical Protestants who were also being persecuted by France (the Huguenots) back then). They built another small fort nearby called La Puente del Buen Pastor facing westward across Asiatic Key towards Marlin Key Colony where French traders landed seeking passage southwards to America under Captain Pierre Duquesne - one of King Philippe II’s royal administrators responsible for expanding French possessions throughout North America - upon discovering Spanishboats moored off shore harvesting coconut palms! Miramar is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The CDP has a land area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²). The first settlers in Miramar were entrepreneurs and investors who purchased land from the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1836. A post office called Miramar was established in 1837, and as demand for goods and services increased, so too did the population; by 1850, Miramar had 778 residents. By 1860, its population had reached 2,500; by 1870 it had grown to 10,000. In 1892, local entrepreneur James Fenton erected what is now known as "Fenton's Palace" on Usonia Road east of I-95. Fenton became one of South Florida's most significant businesspeople and political leaders during his time there; he served as Mayor of Miami Beach from 1889 to 1893 and as a state senator from 1896 to 1904. During World War IIMiramar played an important role in the manufacture of military supplies for Allied forces fighting in Europe. The beach town received large shipments of war materials like gasoline and ammunition before American troops invaded Europe in 1944 In 1948 Miramar joined Miami Beach proper as an unincorporated community located within Doral Township boundaries
Miramar was founded in 1892 by Captain John F. Magee, who named it for his personal home on the Miramar Peninsula. The first white settlers arrived in Miramar in 1894 and the town rapidly grew thereafter. In 1916, Florida's first state legislature convened at Miramar and the then-newly elected governor, Woodrow Wilson, delivered a speech in which he proclaimed that "Florida is born of free soil" and called for an expansion of citrus production in the state. In 1922, Miramar became one of two towns (the other being Fort Myers) to be incorporated as counties within Broward County. In 1951,Broward County merged with Palm Beach County to create a larger administrative unit. The population of Miramar peaked at over 100,000 during World War II; however, following the war the population declined steadily until its current low levels today. Today, many people still call Miramar home because it is close to where they live or work; however, there are few commercial businesses located in town proper due to its distance from major shopping areas and highways.
