In 1920, Miramar Municipal Airport opened when it was improved by then-Mayor Franklin "Frank" Keyes to serve as the primary airport for the community. With its central location within town limits and easy access to I-4 or SR 527 southbound, this airport continued to be used until it closed its doors in 1971 following a decision by Keyes not to upgrade it further because he felt that an upgraded airport would have interfered with his efforts to build new housing developments within town limits which he desired for growth within the community. With only two runways ( asphalt , 3/23 mi [5 km] long), Miramar Municipal Airport served primarily local aircraft carrying general aviation traffic until 1977 when upgrades were made which increased its size by adding a fourth runway ( asphalt , 12/24 mi [21 km] long), making it one of Orlando's largest airports (it remained one of Orlando's largest airports until 2007 when it lost its status as being one of Orange County’s three major airports). And despite having been classified as an "active" airport since 1977 by FAA officials,[2] Miramar Municipal Airport ceased operations on January 20th 2009 due to economic conditions[3][4][5] but has been reborn as OCkunft Regional Airpark which again serves local aircraft carrying general aviation traffic although now without any paved runways
