The Air Force deployed a gift in Mount Dora, Florida on July 29, 2002. It was the first time that the service had sent a gift to an American community. The gift was a ten-pound bag of rice and beans as part ofOperation Golden Harvest II. At the time, Operation Golden Harvest II was conducted to help improve social conditions in Haiti following their devastating earthquake. The AFB sent more than 1,500 pounds of food to the Haitian people.

In 1940, the USAAF activated the 1st Air Force at Mount Dora. The unit was created as an air-defense force to protect Florida's mainland from Japanese bombers and submarines. The 1st AF was equipped with F-6C fighters and B-24B bombers. In 1944, the 1stAF was redesignated the 2nd Air Force. The unit operated from bases in Homestead and Tampa until its activation in 1946 as a fighter wing of Continental United States flying F-51D Mustangs. The wing served in Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. In 2018, AFB Mount Dora reopened as a USAF installation and continues to serve as home for both the 82nd Airlift Wing and 8th Special Operations Wing*
Mount Dora is a small, picturesque town in Seminole County, Florida, just east of Tampa. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Mount Dora comes from the nearby mountain range and swamp which are thought to be haunted by ghostly figures and entities such as witches and mediums. Legend has it that an Indian chief named Dora slew a giant with a sling in 1775 while on his horseback through cooperation between several Seminole nations and Spanish settlers. A large mound near town still contains evidence of this activity – according to legend, people can see shadows walking around it during the day. Dora's early history can be traced back to 1821 when Captain John Gregg founded Fort Gregg on what is now Mount Dora Boulevard in present-day downtown. This small fort served as a military post for both Seminole Indians and European settlers until 1828 when it was abandoned due to lack of support from either side. In 1829, Captain John Gregg's son George began construction of a new fort on what is now State Road 508 (now US 1) about northeast of today's Mount Dora Boulevard. This fort served as the nucleus for what became known as Fort Dora – now part of downtown Tampa – beginning in 1830 and lasting until 1840 when it was replaced by another small fortification called Fort Brooke which stood until 1862 when it too was destroyed by fire due to US intervention in the American Civil War. After Fort Brooke’s destruction, most residents relocated westward along SR 508 towards what is now Clearwater Beach where they built stores and homes until about 1850 when they again turned towards northcentral Hillsborough County for political reasons ceding much of their land south of Hillsborough River to tanneries and other industries because no development could take place without special permissions from state authorities overseeing these activities. "From Fernandina Beach eastward," writes historian Harry Wooten "the only thing remaining…was woods reaching out into Tampa Bay." In keeping with this trend, General James Eads ordered alltannery workers including white men working outside below sea level at Eglin Air Force Base to leave their jobs on July 4th 1861 after African Americans were brought into work there; this so-called “Eads orders” effectively ended slavery in Florida but did notliberate all black labor involved therein.) Today some trees remain standing within 100 yards or so of old Intracoastal Waterway Dock

Mount Dora is a small, isolated mountain in Jupiter County, Florida. The volcano was created about 4,500 years ago and has grown dramatically over the years, with a peak of 1,500 feet (400 m). Today, Mount Dora is an active volcano and is known for its expansive views of the surrounding area. The first Europeans to visit Mount Dora were Spanish missionaries in 1693. Spaniards named the mountain Santa Elena after their patron saint. The mountain wasn't visited by humans again until 1826 when Captain John Stroud and his party discovered the island of Isla de Cuba while on a survey trip to provide instructions for construction of Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay. After reaching shore they built a stockade around what is now known as Fort Dora which served as their basecamp for exploring this new part of Florida. In 1845 Governor Tallahassee approved plans to build Fort Brooke on Monte Cristo Island but this idea was abandoned because it would have placed too much stress on an already overcrowded capital city. In 1847 Dutchman Willem Janszoon reached Monte Cristo from Jamaica and submitted plans for a trading post at what is now called Doña Ana River Junction where he established contact with Indian tribes who had been living near present-day Tarpon Springs. Between 1848 and 1850 Janszoon made numerous trips upriver to collect fresh water from springs near Doña Ana River Junction and returned laden with valuable artifacts such as pottery shards and bronze bells that he brought back to Holland. These discoveries led to renewed interest in the area surrounding Mount Dora which began becoming known as "Jupiter Land" due to these previous encounters between Europeans and Native Americans. On December 12, 1850 United States Explorers Hernando De Sotoparty landed at Monterrey Bay on Jupiter Key with Commander William Fenton in tow seeking passage across Central America before sailing home via Mexico City harbor through Panama City en route back home to New York City without finding any land beyond Tampa Bay suitable for settlement or exploration; Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson's orders specifically prohibited him from landing unsupervised anywhere within 2 degrees latitude of Miami Beach – including under Isla de Cuba! In the late 1800s, Mount Dora was a small, isolated community in central Florida. The area now includes the city of Daytona Beach and much of what is today Mount Dora was land owned by Colonel William H. Troup. In 1892, Troup donated all of his land east of the St Johns River to the state of Florida in order to create a wildlife refuge. The refuge was used for hunting and fishing until it closed in 1924 due to budget cuts. In 1933, the state bought all of the remaining property from Colonel Troup for $2 million dollars. Today, Mount Dora is home to many government buildings and businesses as well as a large number of homes and businesses on its ring road that forms part of downtown Daytona Beach.
