Mount Dora was a small mountain in central Florida that is now part of the city of Daytona Beach. The mountain was first named by Spanish explorers in 1541 for Diego de la Vega, captain of the Lespedeza expedition and one of the leaders of the quest to find a route to India. The name may have been derived from Doña Dora, one of its several early Indian inhabitants. The first humans to live at Mount Dora were Native American Indians who hunted deer and rabbits on the mountain during the spring and summer seasons. Between 1828 and 1830, Europeans discovered salt water near present-day Mount Dora and began developing a plantation at what is now Bay Street in Daytona Beach. They called this new development "Dorado," which means "mountain" or "beautiful land." In 1851, Captain John M Davis led an exploratory party that explored much of central Florida. On his return trip from Tallahassee, he named Mount Dora after his old friend General David Dixon's successful exploration Expedition No. 2 in 1795-96 which had crossed overland from Georgia to Pensacola Bay on Lake Monroe. In 1855, Captain James Cook sailed past Cape Canaveral on his ill-fated voyage into space while visiting Daytona Beach on his way back to England; he may have seen Mount Dora from orbit as he passed overhead. In 1886, railroad developer J P Morgan acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day Daytona Beach along US 1 between Biscayne Boulevard and I-4 for $10 million dollars. This area became known as Morgan Park after J P Morgan's son William H Morgan purchased it in 1908 with money earned during World War I as Allied Forces liberated Europe from German occupation.
