Mount Dora is a small, rural town in Polk County, Florida, about 20 miles east of Tampa. It is the easternmost community on the St. Petersburg–Tampa Bay Expressway. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Spanish meaning "horseshoe" or "horn". The Mount Dora post office opened in 1892 and closed in 1957. The town began as a tiny settlement on a high bluff overlooking Lake Okeechobee. There were only 10 residents when it first formed in 1892, but by 1907 there were 300 people living hereabouts and business grew quickly with logging and farming interests being major employers for many years. During World War II, Mount Dora became an important military supply depot for the Allies because it had landbases around the lake that could be used to store munitions. The town's main shopping center was built during this time and continued to serve its local population until 1977 when it was replaced by Interstate 474 which cut through the community routing of Route 66 (the old Turnpike). Mount Dora has seen some growth over recent decades as new subdivisions have been developed along its scenic lakeside shores; however, much of what makes Mount Dora such a appealing place remains unchanged: its central location within easy reach of all manner of activities both recreational and commercial; wide variety of cultural attractions available; quality public schools; ample employment opportunities for locals; fond memories among locals of their childhood homecoming dances - all distilled into one relatively unassuming place known simply as "Mt."Dora."

As of the census of 2000, there were 997 people, 478 households, and 269 families residing in the town. The population density was 3 inhabitants per square mile (1/km²). There were 511 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%of the population.
Mount Dora is a mountain located in central Florida. It is the highest peak in the Pensacola Mountains and is part of the Gulf Coastal Range. The peak was named for General Pedro Delgado, who fought in the Mexican-American War, and for his role as Commandant at Fort Donelson during that war.
