Mount Dora, Florida is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida on the edge of the Everglades. The community was founded in 1892 by George Fenton and his brother-in-law, John L. Webber. It was named after Mount Dora in central Greece. The Fenton family had come to Florida from Massachusetts and were Sephardic Jews who had settled in Fort Myers, Florida in 1868. In 1892, the brothers decided to rename their community for their father-in-law's role as a leader of an unsuccessful effort to purchase land north of Fort Myers and build a large cattle station. The Post Office at Mount Dora opened on July 1, 1893 under name of "Webberville". The first settler was Moses Weingarten who arrived on horseback from New York City with his wife and six children on October 5th, 1892. Weingarten built a cabin near what is now the junction of US Highway 441 and SR 1801A (now SR 183). He sold land to other farmers before eventually dying in 1907 without issue having acquired any interest in the mountain property he had bought ten years earlier. His son Julius later donated all but one acre (half a mile) of that remaining tract which became part of Mount Dora Village Center when it was established in 1917 by developer Harry Hinges as an open-air shopping center with movie theaters and other businesses adjacent thereto. Mount Dora is home to many interesting historical items including: 1) A cannon used during World War II against Japanese forces atoll; 2) A replica statue of George Washington which has been placed at the interchange between US Highway 441/SR 1801A and US Highway 90 outside original settlement site; 3) A number of period homes dating back to after WWII such as "Swingtime" (1914), "Boys' Town" (1939), etc.; 4) An early 20th century grocery store built by grocer David Jaffe; 5) A collection of over 100 Civilian Conservation Corps camps set up around Brevard County during 1930s thru 1940s; 6) One hundred pioneer trees planted circa 1912 near present day intersection between Cypress Creek Road/US Highways 41 & 180/SR 183; 7) An early steel mill constructed circa 1916 on current site where local aluminum production began; 8) An exhibit featuring some 6500 artifacts dating back to prehistory through post-contact times currently being displayed at nearby SCUBA WORLD Headquarters;;
