Mount Dora is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Mount Dora was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century A.D. The area that would become Mount Dora was originally called Petaqua and then Moccogee after two Indian chiefs who discovered it in 1694. The early settlers were Paleo-Indian hunters and gatherers who hunted game near the mouth of the Kissimmee River which they named "Moccasin Bay." By 1801, Spanish traders had spread overland from St Augustine to Jacksonville and had begun exploring this area for valuable minerals such as saltpeter and iron ore. They soon discovered a large body of freshwater tributaries flowing into the Kissimmee River which they named "Lake Dora". In 1822, Colonel James Kenedy founded Palm Beach County on what is now downtown Mount Dora with land grants from Spain. He named his new county after himself—Spanish for "mountain peak." In 1824, Governor Melchor Osuna granted land north of Lake Okeechobee to General Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to develop into an agricultural colony known as Santiago de Cuba; however, no serious development occurred until 1830 when Captain John Cushing purchased some adjoining lands and established Cushing's Fort on them (CUSHING FORT). After Fort Cushing was destroyed by Seminole Indians in 1835 during their Confederate invasion of Florida, Major General Winfield Scott ordered its replacement by Fort Stuart on Santa Rosa Island (later Tampa) off Hillsborough Bay; however, this also failed to receive much attention because there were more important military objectives nearby - such as suppressing Seminole Indian attacks against British settlements along Tampa Bay. This lack of success led to Major General Hernando De Soto's attempt to establish a permanent military presence in Florida in 1840 when he organized what became known as the Florida Expedition under Lieutenant Colonel David Levy with orders to explore all possible routes connecting Mexico City with Havana via Central America; however De Soto's mission failed due bothmilitary logistics problems and resulting political instability across Spanish America following Napoleonic Wars ended with French occupation of most of North America including Puerto Rico eventually leading to American control over Cuba starting in 1898 de Soto died suddenly while trying crossing Volunteer State line westward near present day Clearwater without having accomplished his original goals leaving behind him one major strategic blunder that effectively isolatedFlorida from Mexican power resulting in decade long war between Ulysses S Grant & Emiliano Zapata
