The Marines of Company K, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment deployed in Mount Dora, Florida on November 11-15, 2003. The deployment was to assist with the Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign and was part of the larger American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in Iraq. The Marines had been called up for this deployment after President George W. Bush issued an Executive Order requiring all military members to serve out their full terms without extensions or waivers. The order also called for a mobilization of all Marine Corps reservists in anticipation of potential large numbers of Marines being needed in Iraq. This order also increased the number of Marines deployed to about 350 men from 100 men when Company K was mobilized on September 15, 2003 and deployments have continued at this rate ever since. The deployment saw the first use by the Marine Corps of Specialty Unit 721 which is now known as Alpha Company Charlie during Operation Desert Storm in 1990s while still stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. During World War II 1/5th Marines used this unit known as "Poochie" code name for a landing craft rigged with rubber tracks that could be pushed ashore onto beaches using a small engine until they could be pulled by an Army transport and transported inland where they would disembark and fight their way through enemy lines under cover of darkness into battle against overwhelming odds (a skill apparently lost along with many other battlefield skills during World War II). It should be noted that this unit never actually landed on land but instead used seagoing ships docked at various points around the Mediterranean Sea before being takenlanded by air because amphibious assaults were then considered too risky given wartime enemy anti-aircraft capabilities. Mount Dora is a small, but important, community in central Florida that was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The community was founded on the site of what is now known as Mount Dora National Park and has been home to humans since before Paleo-Indian times. The earliest evidence of human activity at Mount Dora comes from archaeologists who studied ancient petroglyphs that were found near the community in the late 19th century. Mount Dora was originally part of a much larger area that included present-day Jacksonville and St. Petersburg. In 1811, a group of Spanish explorers discovered and named the area Santa Elena de los Baños after their patron saint, Jesus Christ. This naming change created some confusion among European settlers because they had previously called the area Santiago de Cuba—the name given to Havana by Spain during its colonization of Cuba—which spelled "Dorada." The first European settler at Mount Dora was José María Avila, who arrived in 1795 and built his house on what is now First Street. Avila's wife, Juana de la Cruz y Avila, also set up shop here around this time. For many years it served as a stopping point for travelers looking for passage through Florida to Mexico or South America; however, with increased travelogue activity throughout North America during this time period, by 1802 Mount Dora had grown too small for any single settlement to persist long enough for records to be kept there. In 1814 Pedro Menéndez Pinzón purchased 2 acres (0 kilometers2) east of First Street from José María Avila for £100 English pounds (U$2 million). Menéndez Pinzón would become one of the most significant characters in Mount Dora history because he would spend more than three decades trying unsuccessfully to establish an autonomous community there self-reliant from Spanish control. He died without having managed to make his dream come true and his death marked the end of an era in which Spanish colonists tried hard but often failed to create independent communities within their own colonies throughout North America despite 5 centuries of effort. A year later another Spaniard named Manuel Fernández Vásquez bought 3 acres (1 kilometer2) west of First Street from Pedro Menéndez Pinzón for £120 English pounds (U$3 million). Fernández Vásquez quickly established himself as a key player in Mount Dora life due to his entrepreneurialism and commitment to developing new commercial enterprises within the town center while maintaining close ties with his family back home in Madrid.
