In 1925, Mount Dora became a city with a population of 3,500 people when it merged with neighboring Dunedin into one municipality. In 1959 the city name was changed again to Mount Dora – City Limits after annexation by nearby Sanford which made up much of Central Florida then - when Sanford lost itsCity Limit status to Winter Garden Township due to population growth in that township while still within Polk County limits. Today's downtown includes many original buildings dating back to before World War II including The New Deal Federal Works Administration building now used as the offices of the University of South Florida; administration buildings for schools such as Stetson University; old military bases including Fort Brooke Army Base where fighter pilots trained during World War II; several businesses including Sears and JCPenney; two churches: First Presbyterian Church and Christmastime Lutheran Church both built before 1920 and still standing today despite various floods over recent years; as well as homes owned by many residents from throughout Central Florida who have lived here since before incorporation date or even earlier like pioneer Nathaniel Chapman who settled near present day Dunedin in 1795 along with his family consisting only five men - three women and one boy!
